Richard Pollen Obituary

Richard Langdon Pollen

Richard Langdon Pollen, a former resident of Ketchikan and Craig, AK and long active in the Alaskan seafood industry, died unexpectedly January 25, 2011 in Seattle, WA.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday February 4, at Ray's Boathouse in Seattle. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bauer Funeral Home in Snohomish, WA.
Mr. Pollen was born on October 26, 1951 in Northhampton, MA. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1970 to 1972. He moved to Ketchikan in the early 1980's with his dog Zeus, and was one of the original owners of Alaska Specialty Seafoods. In the mid-1980's he started tendering fish for Silver Lining Seafoods aboard the tender "Daybreak" and eventually went to work for the company full time.
He moved to Craig in 1987 to manage Silver Lining's processing plant there. During his time in Craig he served on the Craig City Council from 1994 to 1999. He married his wife, Karen, in their Craig home August 12, 1990. In typical fishing family style, Mrs. Pollen remembers their wedding day was also during an opening for the halibut fishery. They moved from Craig in 1999.
From those early days in his seafood career, Mr. Pollen went on to work as plant manager for NorQuest Seafoods in its Adak processing facility in 2000. He moved to the NorQuest fleet manager position for Bristol Bay operations in 2003 and continued in that role to the present after the acquisition of NorQuest by Trident Seafoods. Granite Falls, WA, was home for the Pollens since 2002.
Peers in the seafood industry remember Mr. Pollen as a pioneer in opening new Alaskan fisheries such as winter rockfish, and the dive fisheries for sea urchins, geoducks and sea cucumbers. They describe him as someone "with a positive attitude, a readiness to try new challenges, and an ability to communicate with everybody. He had an innate ability to understand and relate to people on a personal level."
Another friend said Mr. Pollen was so successful in the seafood industry because he fit right in, "smoking and drinking with the fishermen!"
Mr. Pollen's family remembers his favorite activities as hiking, golfing, baseball, football, reading, fishing, traveling, kayaking and "driving around during a storm to check out the damage!"
He was preceded in death by his mother; father; sister, Marianne; and granddaughter, Rylan.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; children, Theresa Media, Thrina Marsing, Marty Media and Thandra Media; grandchildren, Corbin Wolford, Sage Wolford, Ember Marsing and Phoenix Marsing; siblings, Barbara Cate, Dianne Susan Watts and Michael Phillips Pollen; nieces, Patricia Ann Bleichfeld, Kathryn Cate Goldman, Jennifer Cate Goldman and Stephanie Lynne Pollen; and twin great-nieces, Alexandra Cate Bleichfeld and Julia Lena Bleichfeld.
Condolences may be sent to: Karen Pollen, 19819 Canyon Dr., Granite Falls, WA 98252.

I am very sad to hear of Richard’s passing. A happy, hardworking family man with a ready smile is how I remember him. Even though I only knew him a short time while he lived in Adak, he is still someone I would consider a friend. My deepest sympathy goes to the Pollen family. You have lost a special man. To Richard: fair winds and following seas…

I was very saddened to hear of Richards passing, he was a very good man. I met Richard in early 1992 when he lived and worked in Craig, Alaska. And through all the time i knew him i never once saw him lose his calm happy demeanor. When time would pass and i would talk to him on the phone he had a way about him that just made you happy to be talking to him. He had a very great sense of humor and i loved talking to him. I always ended our conversations happier than when we started. My heart goes out to the family for he was a great man and will be missed by all, you are all in my prayers.

I got to know Richard a little in Bristol Bay when he would talk with me about fishing schedules for the Igushik River or the Togiak herring gillnet fishery. I always enjoyed talking with Richard and was very sad to hear about his passing. I will remember him and keep him in my thoughts.

Richard was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed. I was so very sadden to hear of his passing and my heart goes out to you Karen and the family for your loss. Richard will always be remembered for his kind words, great sense of humor, and a laugh to make the day a little brighter. He loved sharing stores about his family, and I loved hearing them. I've worked with Richard for the last 6 years and he will be greatly missed by all. May you always remember the happy times, because those will get you through those dark days.

I remember Richard's face in two favorite expressions, either his eyebrows furrowed and lips pursed as he knuckled out a solution to the most recent problem to come along. Or, more often, bursting into laughter with his wicked sense of humor and delightfully positive approach to life and people.

That was so Richard. Completely, seriously dedicated to his job, to the people he worked with, to the industry, and to his community. Yet just one burst of laughter away from the love and enjoyment he devoted to his family, friends, and others who crossed his path.

Richard is one of those people who will always be remembered by many, many people. What better tribute.

Richard and I have only worked together for a relatively short time, however I quickly found he was kind, generous, and always had a positive, get things done attitude. He'll be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. My deepest sympathy, Lurilla

I am so sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you in this difficult time. I was privileged to have known Richard both as a tenderman and then as a co-worker. Though the time I spent around Richard was all too short, every time I was around him it was so positive. Richard was one of those few people you meet in life that from the first moment you talked with him you knew he was one of the good guys, one you could count on in any situation to come up with a solution to a problem that worked for everyone, always a smile and a kind word, he was a selfless individual who always had a positive outlook. I will always remember Richard with great joy and all of us who knew him will miss him greatly. My heartfelt condolences to you in your time of sorrow.

My prayers are with the Pollen family to help them through this time of grief. I was very fortunate to have met Richard while working in Wrangell. We weren't there long, but we had spent enough time to know that he was a wonderful person. He was great to work with and will be missed by many.

Karen
Richard will be missed by many. He touched a lot of people in his many adventures. Always smiling, always willing to say "yes". We spend many days together building the Craig plant and taking "time to breath" at Hollis. You and the family are always welcome at the Hollis retreat. In the business Richard was always willing to do the work; Ketchikan to Craig to Adak and Bristol Bay. We will always try to follow his example of good spirit and positive attitude. He will be missed.

Karen,
You know how I feel. You also know words could never express the admiration I felt for Richard. I am fortunate that I had him in my life for so many reasons. He was a wonderful man that touched everyone he met. His smile, his humor and his laughter will live forever in my heart.
I want you to know that I will be there for you as you both were there for me.
Just know & remember I am only a phone call away.
I'm going to miss my Dad......
Love & strength to you and your family
