Herbert Andrews Obituary

Herbert Andrews

Herbert Andrews, 82, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family, on Friday, April 22, 2011, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to be remembered for his kind nature, determination and deep spiritual convictions.
Herb was born November 15, 1928, to Edward and Emma (Zimmer) Andrews in Pocatello, ID. His family moved to Boise when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Boise High School in 1947. After high school, he began his apprenticeship as a pressman and enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve Sea-bees.
While working in Twin Falls, ID, he met the love of his life, Sharon Beutler, at the Rhythm Roller Rink. They were married on March 28, 1953 in Ontario, OR. After their marriage, they moved to Medford, OR, on to Weiser, ID, and finally to Caldwell, ID, where they resided for ten years. While in Caldwell, Herb worked for the Caldwell News Tribune newspaper and was a member of the Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge - Mt. Moriah. He held many offices in the Jaycees and was named Outstanding Key Man in 1957.
Herb's newspaper pressman career took him to Yakima, WA for a brief time in the late 1960s. He went to work for the Everett Herald in 1968, retiring from the Herald in 1991. He also retired from the Sea-bees in 1973.
Herb was well known in the Credit Union community in both Caldwell, ID and Everett, WA. He served in many different capacities on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Plus Credit Union (formerly known as the Northwest Telco Credit Union) for more than 40 years. Among his other affiliations were Scottish Rite, Associate Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel 24, Royal Travelers/Good Sam Club and the First United Methodist Church of Everett.
Herb's favorite form of relaxation was skating. According to Herb's wife, skating was his first love; she was his second. He began roller-skating at a very early age when roller-skating was a competitive sport and he, given his talent, could have chosen a career as a professional skater. Generations of Everett skaters have watched "the old guy in the middle of the floor." The Everett Skate Deck was his choice for celebrating his 80th birthday. Although he could no longer do his trick skating, he continued to glide across the rink and perform a few spins at least once a week. Many thanks to the Skate Deck's owners and employees for their kind consideration over the years.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Otto Andrews.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters, Vicki (Nick) Nucci of Boise, ID, Carol (Jim Hopkins) Andrews of Mill Creek, WA, and son, Mark (Jan) Andrews of Polson, MT; grandchildren, Brandon (Shelly) Sorensen, Jill Dacier, Brooke (Chris Davis) VanLeuven, Matthew Hopkins, Andrews Hopkins, Jim (Laurie) Hopkins, Shelby (Ed Eiker) Hopkins, T.J. Andrews, Nick Andrews and Rylee Andrews; great-grandchildren, Austin VanLeuven, Mariah Davis, Sam Sorensen, Amelia Davis, Abby Hopkins and Jimmy Hopkins; sisters, Emma Lou (Roland) Jones and Jean Anderson of Boise, ID and brothers, Elmer (Naomi) Andrews of Bremerton, WA, Lawrence Andrews of Brookings, OR, Ronald (Mary Ann) Andrews of Bethany, CT and sister-in-law, Sheila Andrews of El Toro, CA. He leaves behind many special friends from all walks of his life.
Thank you to all of our friends and family for the prayers and loving support. Herb's family wishes to express their gratitude to the Providence Hospital, Colby Campus CCU staff who cared for him, especially Vicki, Tod, and Rick of the nursing staff as well as Dr. Tsen and Dr. Sanford Wright.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Everett First United Methodist Church in Everett, WA.
The family suggests memorials in his honor to The Everett United Methodist Church, 3530 Colby Ave, Everett WA 98201, The Salvation Army Church, 2525 Rucker Ave, Everett, WA 98201, or the charity of your choice.

Sharon and Family,

I was very sad to hear of Herb's passing. As one of the Skate Deck owners, I can tell you we thought of Herb as one of our most loyal customers. We enjoyed his being there so much, that as time passed, we no longer felt he should be paying admission! He came in with a smile, left with a smile and made sure we all smiled while he was there. The "old guy in the middle of the floor" who was very young at heart, will definitely be missed! It was an honor to have Herb as part of our Skate Deck family.

Sharon and Family, As an employee of the Credit Union for many years, Herb was the highlight of many of my weeks. He would stop by to chat and have tea, and always ask me how I was. The fact that he always took time to reach out to so many of us here at the Credit Union just shows what a warm and caring man he was. He always left me with a smile on my face. I will miss him and will remember him with fond memories. I am very sorry for your loss. May the Lord ease your pain and may the wonderful memories of Herb be with you always.

Hello Sharon: I know you through our mutual friends Joyce & George Maas. I thought Herb was an absolute peach of a guy. I know he will be sorely missed by all who loved him. He always was right there to assist my grandaughter in her feeble attempts to skate at the deck. She always looked forward to seeing him. That of course was many years ago. Sorry I will not be able to be at the service as I will be out of town. God Bless You and yours. Betty Jean Degenstein.

I was a Jobie for about 2 years in the early 70's. I am sure none of you would remember me but I have thought of Herb many times over the past 40 years and remembered the wonderful person that he was. He genuinely cared about each of the girls and was so much fun to be around. I remember hugs and a great sense of humor. He made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. He was an excellent role model for learning how to treat others, especially young people. He made a difference in my life. I will never forget him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry to hear of Herb's passing away. Seems as our lives get too busy we lose touch with extended family members. May you all have many happy memories to help you through this difficult time. My memories of all of you visiting Boise come back to mind.
