Arthur Murdock Obituary

Arthur K. Murdock, Jr.

Arthur Kenneth Murdock, Jr., passed away peacefully in Monroe, WA on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 surrounded by his family.
Born September 17, 1924 in Lake Stevens, WA to Arthur K. and Amy F. Murdock, he was a lifelong resident of the Monroe area.
After graduating from Monroe Union High School in 1943, Art enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theater. There, he saw plenty of action on Iwo Jima and Saipan, culminating in the receipt of a purple heart. Through his service experience, Art met many lifelong friends with whom he remained very close for the rest of his life. He eagerly anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed camaraderie with his Marine Corps brothers at annual reunions around the country for nearly thirty years.
After the war, Art returned to Monroe and married his life partner, Jacqueline Bennett, in 1946. At that time, he entered the grocery business, working first for Herb Schwartz at the old Price-Rite, located then on the Northwest corner of Main and Lewis. Later, he worked for Larry Nasman at his store on East Main Street, eventually buying him out. After a number of years of successful business ownership, Art anticipated the movement of Monroe's commerce out to Highway 2, and consequently sold the store.
During his years as a business owner in Monroe, Art was also very active as a member of what was then the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, eventually serving as captain. Many merchants and others from those days remember Art and his butcher partners, Irving and Bob Scharf, responding to a fire call, running down Main Street toward the fire department (now Speedy Auto-Glass), fire whistle blaring, aprons flapping in the breeze!
After selling his grocery store, Art went to work for the Washington State Liquor Control Board, eventually managing the Snohomish store. He remained a part-time employee of the liquor board for many years.
In addition to being a loving husband and father, Art will be remembered by those who knew him as a good and loyal friend. He was a wonderful conversationalist, genuinely interested in everyone he met. Art would engage with anyone; indeed, his family would often be amused and amazed when he either ran into people he knew --- or would make new friends --- literally everywhere!
Art was predeceased by his wife, Jackie, in 2002, and by his great-granddaughter, Sara Ruth, in 2009.
He is survived by his son, Bruce, of Monroe; his daughter, Jody, of Lake Stevens; and by his three grandchildren, Sonny Stewart of Duvall, WA, Stephen Murdock of Spokane, WA and Beth Murdock of Bozeman, MT.
At his request, there will be no services.

In 1964, at the age of 13, I went to work at Larry's Food Store and had the rare privilege of working with and around Art. It was an All-Star crew displaying "Old School" customer service back then. There was Larry Nasman, Bill Dennis, my grandmother Martha Blair, and Art. The Meat Department had Irv & Bob Scharf. You could CHARGE groceries for a month back then, pay it up by the 5th, and start over again. Art took exquisite care of the produce and knew what day specific customers would be coming in to shop and what they liked. He'd set aside certain produce for a customer because he "knew" they'd want it. Controlled chaos erupted when the fire alarm went off. All the guys would drop their aprons and head out the door to the fire hall just a half-block away. My grandmother stayed back and took care of the store. Some of my greatest lessons in life were learned at that store under the wings of Art and all the crew. Bruce and Jody, you can be so proud of the legacy that was passed on to you by your Dad and Mom. Jim Blair, Monroe

Our sympathy to your family. For years your dad and grandad was such a part of our lives. My mom did not have a drivers license so it was up to each one of us 8 kids when we turned 16, and could drive, to go to Larry's Food Store every Saturday and get groceries for her. We have many memories of going to "get groceries" . Your dad always spent time visiting with us - he was such a conversationalist - even with us teenagers. I know my dad and mom considered him a close friend - I remember he gave my mom a beautiful dried flower arrangement for her birthday once - she kept it for years. He will be remebered!

Bruce,
So sad to hear of your Dad's passing. Your parents were part of the village that raised all the kids in Monroe. Your Dad was always so cool during our High School years and a wonderful friend. He will be missed by all of us native Monroe people. Your parents left a great legacy by raising you with integrity and a kind spirit. I will always be grateful for them.

We’ve had the great privilege of working with Art for many years. He was one of those rare people who always lit up the room whenever he arrived. Conversations with Art were always easy since he was such a good listener and contributor to the discussion. He cared greatly for his family, friends, and local community as a whole. We wish his family all our best during this difficult time. Art will be deeply missed by us all.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Art Murdock for many years. I worked several years with him, and can say they were the best years of all my working years, as I am now retired. I have always considered Art as a hero, for his time spent in the Marine Corps, he never would talk about it, but with my insistence he did tell me two stories which brought us both to tears. I decided then never to ask again. We had many good times together, at work and away from, he was such a wonderful person. I have been moved to sit and write about some of the good fun times we had, also at the insistence of my son who also loved Art, saying that way they will be preserved within the family. Art could really touch people, people would smile when they saw him, and seek him out when they knew he was present. To Arts family, I am so sorry for your loss. I know you all, as Art spoke of each and every one of you, with much affection. Heaven now knows, Art and Jackie Murdock.
