Joseph Chrobuck Obituary

Joseph Thomas Chrobuck

Joseph Thomas Chrobuck died April 24, 2011 at the age of 92. Joe was born January 22, 1919 to John and Valeria Chrobuck in Doty, Washington. His family moved to Pe Ell, Washington where he graduated high school in 1937. After settling in Everett, he did many odd jobs to put himself through college and it was during this time that he met the love of his life and future bride, Betty O'Toole. He graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Pharmacology in 1942.
His desire to serve his country during World War II led him to join the Marine Corps., where he distinguished himself as a Naval Aviator flying combat missions in the South Pacific. He was most proud of being part of VMF113 and flying one of the first Corsair Squadrons during the Central Pacific Campaign. After the war, he and Betty settled in Seattle, WA where Joe opened his first pharmacy on Capitol Hill. Eventually, he opened two clinic pharmacies adjacent to Swedish Hospital where he and Betty worked side by side for many years. A large part of his life was also centered in the Marysville, WA area where he and Betty operated a small blueberry farm and bought a summer home. He was instrumental in leading a group of local citizens in a fight against Arco that led to a land mark decision preventing an oil refinery from being built in Port Susan Bay. During his lifetime he enjoyed many interests including golf, fishing, gardening and especially thoroughbred horse racing. He was a devoted spouse, a remarkable father, grandfather and great- grandfather. His wisdom and advice will be sorely missed not only by his family, but the many friends and neighbors he cherished.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty.
His is survived by sons, Gerald, Robert, Timothy (Connie); and daughter, Corinne (Roger) Dallman, of Minnesota; grandchildren, Camille, Melissa, Traci, Scott, Alyssa and David; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 26900 78th Ave. NW, Stanwood, WA 98292. A Rosary Service will also be held at the church one hour prior to the Mass.
Arrangements entrusted to Purdy & Walters with Cassidy, Everett.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catholic Community Services.

Joe Chrobuck was a wonderful friend of our family. He cared about the McKee's Beach community and was a gracious friend of John and Virginia Simpson and their family Cathy, Chris, Karen, Craig and Connie. We will miss him every time we walk by his garden. The sweet peas he grew for anyone to pick will still bloom, but the beach will not be the same without him.

RIP good ol' joe!!

I interviewed Joseph Chrobuck for my 2008 book, Pe Ell's Polish Heritage. I am considerably younger at 86, so I didnt know him as a child in Pe Ell. My mother used to give me two bits to go to their house and get a haircut from Joseph's mother. Joseph reminisced about is friendship with classmate Charles Martin who was killed in WWII. He was not very forthcoming about his illustrious Marine Corps career, but I am happy to read about it in the obit.
May his soul rest in Peace
