Ray Slocum Obituary

Ray Arthur Slocum

Ray Arthur Slocum, 94, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at home with family by his side. He was born to Arthur and Harriet in Mancelona, Michigan on April 23, 1917.
He was preceded in death by wife, Virginia of 52 years; and sisters, Iva Dalton and Loretta Manton.
He is survived by a brother, Harold, of Helena, MT; his children, son, Richard and daughter, Diana Simons and husband, Dan; grandchildren, Pamela McCrorie, Robin Jakobe, Clinton Slocum and Bradley Slocum, Troy Taylor, Todd Taylor and Travis Taylor, and Anna Allen; and 15 great-grandchildren.
At a young age he acquired a love for animals and gardening as he helped his grandparents on the family farm. As he grew and learned about life he always found joy in sharing what he had, a gift he passed down to his family. He loved God, his family and the joys of growing food in his garden, much of which he gave away. He spent his life around his horses, sleigh rides and buggy's in his younger days and many horses over the years on his farm.
Ray spent most of his career working at lumber mills as a heavy equipment operator.
Ray's home church was Mt. Vernon First Baptist.
A Memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Special thanks to Evergreen Hospice nurses and caregivers who so devotedly helped in his last days of his long life.
