Vernon Castle Obituary

Vernon "Vern" N. Castle

Vernon "Vern" N. Castle, 90, passed away April 10, 2011 in Everett, WA.
He was born to Irving and Selma Castle August 17, 1920 in Huron, SD. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Anders and Marin Melos, in Tracy, MN and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1942 and spent WWII as Radarman on the Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina. He took great pride in his service years spent mostly in the Pacific Theatre. Returning home from war, he wooed a young woman, Eloise LeMaster, from Macomb, IL. They married in August of 1946 and moved to Seattle before settling in N. Lakewood where they raised their three children. He learned the faith of the Lutheran Church and brought up his family there. Eloise, Terry, Linda and Jo Ann were baptized the same day. He worked as a carpenter, installed acoustic ceilings and was chief maintenance man for the Lakewood School District before retiring. The family built, lived in and sold four new homes over the years. He provided well for them and was able to retire and travel around the country. His favorite activities were fishing, playing pool and motor homing. He and Eloise loved to "snowbird" to Arizona and did so for a few years before moving there permanently. When Eloise became ill many years later they moved back to Washington to be closer to their family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Gaylord Castle; and wife of 62 years, Eloise.
Surviving Vern are children, Terry (Janet) Castle of Stanwood, WA, Linda (Bill) Winter of Lynnwood, WA and Jo Ann (Ward) Shields of Aneta, ND; brother, Ray (Pearl) Castle; two grandsons; and one great granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Arlington Municipal Cemetery at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, PO Box 70, N. Lakewood, WA 98259.
