Byng Nixon Obituary

Byng W. Nixon

Byng W. Nixon, age 92 passed away on March 17, 2011 at the Warm Beach Senior Community Center in Stanwood, WA. He was born to Edith Fernee' and Jesse Dale Nixon on October 30, 1918 in Seattle, WA.
Byng attended Seattle Public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School (Seattle) in 1937. He went to the University of Washington on a football scholarship. UW Linemen Glen Conley and Byng Nixon both attended Lincoln High, then UW, and then played on the Tacoma Indians together. They were called "The Birdcage Twins" because they wore face masks, nothing but a plastic bar, on their helmets.
The UW team also played in a bowl game in Hawaii and traveled there by boat, which took about a week.
During his senior year, Byng married Eudora F. Britten on January 31, 1941. Upon his graduation from UW in 1941, Byng played semi-professional football for the Seattle Bombers and Tacoma Indians while also working at Todd Shipyard.
Byng began his teaching career with Seattle Public Schools as a physical education teacher. Byng taught for most of his career at Lincoln High School at which he was the head track and field coach, and assistant football and basketball coach, plus the Dean of Students. He retired from the Seattle Public Schools in 1979.
Byng spent his time outside of school painting houses, fixing things for his family and friends. He built two homes for his family, one on Camano Island and one in North Ballard. Byng and Eudora enjoyed dancing at the Elk's Club and going on trips to places like Las Vegas, Ireland and China.
Byng was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Eudora; his daughter, Patricia L. Ingraham; and his sister, Mickey McAllister.
He is survived by his sons, Mike B. Nixon (Amy), Dr. Tim J. Nixon (Beccie); his daughters, Kathy D. Madigan (Larry) and Maureen L. Setterberg (Dan); and sister-in-law, Patricia Bell (Bob).
He has 13 grandchildren, Diane Dixon, Sandra Ingraham, Kathy Dorr, Dan Ingraham, Dave Ingraham, Bill Nixon, Sean Nixon, Kelly Madigan, Megan Madigan, Seth Setterberg, Nick Setterberg, Samantha Nixon and Blake Nixon. Byng also has 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Again, I am reminded of Coach Nixon... I only knew him for half a year, then transferred back to Bothell H.S. to finish my Sophomore (I was here because my Grandfather they think had had a Stroke and I was Senior Grandson), Junior and Senior years. I still had an Aunt at Lincoln, Helen Joy was a Senior. Several of my Uncles had gone to Lincoln and attended Sports Rosters led by Byng. I believe there was a Dave Stipek, Bobby Stipek, Tommy Stipek, Billy Stipek, John Stipek and Leslie Stipek (Grandma had 12 kids!) I believe like my Dad the oldest 3 boys went to Ballard and the 3 Girls went to Lincoln also. I wanted ever since I was a little Guy (Knee high to a Grasshopper) to attend Lincoln H.S. The best spiritual advisor I ever had was Byng... I even had skipped classes a couple a times to go talk to him.
Meanwhile I met Kathy at a Party in Bothell, can't remember her Cousins Name (She went to our Parish Church - St. Brendens... Tried to stay it touch with her even after High School as she had aquired some scholarships, might be wrong but Oxford might have been one the on to Berkley... the Next think I heard was she had met a Sailor and were getting or had gotten Married.
Honestly kinda deflated my energy here. So I did the next best thing for me... I did too. Didn't last long cause it was for all the wrong reasons. But I am Happy if you were the Lucky Guy Larry... I am so happy for Kathy!
Om a Tangent now Larry Madigan... Did you grow up in a huge white House over off 45Th? You Dad a Fireman? You all moved to Carnation and had a Milk Farm? If so we bought our first Milk Cow from your Mom and Dad... (they were my God Parents. Believe your moms name was Francis? Not sure if they were my Dads friends or my Moms... Mom died in 52/53 and Dad August 11, 2017. I really hope what I have stated is referencing your Family... Then I would really feel good about your Marrying Kathy. I mean no harm to you or your Family in my contacts here. If what I have said is actual, you are both part of our Family still!
I am retired spent a long time not just in Airforce but Volunteered to switch to Private Sector (Still in Government Service) and returned to Vietnam, spending almost 2 years in Thailand. But Now wore civilian clothes. Finally I was not happy with things that were being hidden and the nondisclosures So I requested to be seperated from this Service. They returned me to Wright Patterson AFB. Have to say they were not Happy loosing me. Spent 6 months being debriefed and declassified. But they made me sign a silencing Mandate that I could disclose nothing for 50 years, well it's been that and some. Even my Parent had no clue where I was and what I was doing.
My wife is Thai, I met her in Seattle as she was working on her 2nd Masters Degree (U of W). You guys need to as soon as Covid-19 passes, Come visit us in Chiang Mai. I have Great Memories Of Byng. Introduced to him by my Aunt Helen (Who was Spirit Leader 1963 @ Lincoln) He was a friend of my Dad's Brothers who went to Lincoln (My Dad went to Ballard - They lived on line between Ballard School District and Lincoln School District.
Coach Byng was the "Best" Had him as Teacher and Coach in 63' I was so fortunate to meet his Daughter Kathy at a Halloween Party in Bothell we became Friends and she went away to School... Me the same. Was a Good Friend!
I miss Coach Bing as we talked a lot, I would sneak off from Bothell HS to talk to him about Football, He threatened to call my Dad and tell him where I was. (Never Did, or Dad Never said anything). I am Glad Kathy and her Family are doing well in Seattle area. I am Retired and after we sold our Thai Restaurant At Northgate, we moved back to my wife's Home town... Chiang Mai, Thailand. Glad to finally find Byng's Information... took years! of looking! God Bless Everyone... Hope there was a Good Christmas 2020 and a Happy New Year 2021 On your side of the World...David Stipek

Have many memories of Camano Island as a youngster, I guess all the "pioneers" are gone now, Byng, Bud Ericson, Bill Marx, Warren Lindberg, Art Lovett, Ernie Steele, fishing, clamming, swimming, football stories, what a great place for summer trips. Mike Grow

I was on the track team at Lincoln my sophomore year of 1955. When I was at a meet at West Seattle stadium I broke my leg when I tripped over a high hurdle while warming up. I was trying 3 steps between hurdles when I had only practiced the 5 step technique. Consequently I came up short, landed on the hurdle and came down causing the break. Coach Nixon could have chewed me out for trying something so dumb, but instead he was very supportive and sat with me through most of the meet to make sure I was OK. Then he made sure that I met my dad and got to the doctor OK. He was a gentle man and I never forgot his kindness that day.

I have pleasant memories of Byng during the 1970s when I taught at Lincoln. He was friendly presence in the hallways; whether it was keeping a lid on things, motivating kids to get to class, or just making people feel comfortable being at school.

Byng was my "go-to guy" for all my home maintenance questions. I was always picking his brain for ways to fix, improve, or paint my house. He always had the answer and seemed happy to help.

Reading the notice this morning, I learned more about Byng. His was obviously a full an well lived life. Please accept my condolences at this time of your loss.

Byng was my track and field coach at Lincoln H.S.(class of '66). I will always have fond memories of my interactions with him. He was a true gentleman and positive role model for me and many other young men.
