John Ziemer Obituary

John Fredrick Ziemer
July 11, 1943 – Apr. 18, 2011

We have lost our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and best friend suddenly due to heart disease. John will be remembered for his contagious sense of humor, wonder of nature, his strong sense of doing the right thing, his hugs, and his love for his family and friends.
John was born in South Milwaukee, WI on July 11, 1943 where he lived on a family farm with an acre garden and lots of runt pigs dwelling in the kitchen. He attended Northland College and obtained a degree in biology. In 1967 during the Vietnam War John was drafted into the Army where his assignment was the medical lab in Indianapolis. This was followed by many careers including janitor, florist, and insurance salesman. He returned to laboratory medicine at University of Arizona Medical Center in 1974 and obtained his hematology specialty certification. After moving to the Everett area in 1978 John worked at Providence Everett Medical Center in Laboratory Services for 32 years.
John loved traveling, fishing and crabbing from his boat at home in Lagoon Point on Whidbey Island. He loved playing card games, Husky football, raising oysters, scuba diving, gardening and being with his family.
John is survived by his wife, Sandy; children, Jason and Joshua; daughter-in-law, Jody; grandchildren, Audrey and Lily; sisters, Roberta Gast of Minocqua, WI and Beth Emme of Riverdale, MD; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert John and Alta "Pete" Ziemer.
John's celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 4 p.m. at the Everett Waterfront Center Blue Heron room, 1205 Craftsman Way. Providence Hospital will be having a memorial in the coming weeks for employees and staff.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Providence Medical Tower Campaign in Memory of John. Providence General Foundation, P.O. Box 1067, Everett, WA 98206 or online at:

I am saddened to hear of John's passing. We were close friends in high school. He was a kind, gentle and decent man. Though we only recently got together again, I shall miss him and extend my deepest sympathy to Sandy

So very sad to hear of John's passing. As a member of his "Providence family", it was always a joy to work with John. His professional expertise was only a small part of what made him so special; his humor, integrity, and compassion made him great.

Mr. Ziemer was a kind and compassionate man who cared for his family deeply. He had a warm smile to everyone who passed. I remember many band trips in High School wtih him as our "band dad." It was always his van we wanted to ride in!!!!!
I had the pleasure of also running into him more than a handful of times while working at Providence myself. He was quick to boast of his family - especially his beautiful little grandaughters.
He will be missed by many. Blessings to you all.

Dearest Sandy, Jason and Josh and families, I am stunned this has happened. I can recall, fondly, memories of John camping, BBQing (the list goes on) with us during our high school years. He was a great man and will be remembered with fondness. You're all in my prayers.
