Anthony Martinis Obituary

Anthony Paul Martinis

Tony Martinis passed peacefully on February 12, 2011 following an extended illness.
Tony was a lifetime resident of Everett. He graduated from Everett High School in 1955, and attended Everett Community College. He also served in the U.S. Army.
Tony followed the footsteps of generations of the Martinis family as a commercial fisherman. He began working for his father on the Freeland as a small boy. He salmon fished in Alaska in the Bering Sea, South East Alaska and also in the Puget Sound. He was captain and owner of two fishing vessels, the Sykes and the Bluechip (Barbara Jean) for many years. He ran his boats for salmon fishing, shrimp fishing and for other business pursuits.
Tony was a "people person" and had many friends from all walks of life. He seemed to know everyone in Everett as well as their histories. His friendships spanned the entire state and beyond. He was a wonderful and entertaining storyteller. He was a regular with the coffee crowd at Carl's Bakery. Tony loved to entertain and to feed people. He also loved to take people out crabbing on his yacht, the Shiloh, and to host various parties at his home in Everett. He was never one to stick with a schedule and would plan a get together at the drop of a hat.
Throughout his life Tony was a member of various organizations including the Elks and the Knights of Columbus. He was an active businessman and was always involved in one or more extremely interesting business projects.
Tony was born June 26, 1937 in Everett, Washington to his Croatian parents, Antonio Martinis and Winnie Mardesich Martinis.
Tony is survived by his son, Anthony (TJ); granddaughter, Madison; his brother, Paul; and his sisters, Barbara Piercey (Jim) and Ellen Stormo. He leaves a large extended family including his nieces; nephews; cousins; and their families. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all. He is also survived by two exceptionally good friends, Pat Olson and Laina Brown.
TJ and the family are very grateful to Pat and Laina for their being there for Tony and supporting him throughout his extended illness and his passing.
Services for Tony will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 18 at Immaculate Conception Church, 25th & Hoyt. A reception will follow the service at Mattie Hall.

Not sure what to say?

My thoughts and prayers are with the whole Martinis family. Although its been years since I've seen Tony, I remember many trips to 14th. St. dock with my father, Bill Gans, talking to all the fishermen and visiting with my uncle Frank Zuanich. Tony was always bigger than life. May God comfort you all at this difficult time. RIP, Tony!

Today while listening to all the nice things people said about you at your service it only confirmed for me what I already believed - today we said goodbye to one of the good guys. I will never forget the many times I came into my mothers kitchen at a family gathering to find you and my brothers or sisters laughing so hard some times there were tears in your eyes. As you crossed over I can only imagine my brother Mike, my sister Joan, Chuck Stormo, Ann, Jim Dawson and others saying here comes Tony, now we can party. Thanks for sharing your smile with me. I will miss you dearly.

I feel very fortunate for the time I was able to spend with Tony and am especially thankful for the days working with Tony aboard the Barbara Jean/Bluechip. Those moments with Tony are responsible for some of my fondest memories. Whether it was prepping the boat, seining for salmon, or hauling in shrimp, Tony always made a hard day's work enjoyable.

I will always remember Tony for the sparkle in his eye, waiting for a story to tell.

Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Tony's Family for their loss.

A big man, a big heart, and, always big ideas. Tony, we will miss your friendly, and teddy-bear style personality.

Tony came from "a pioneer family in commerical fishing", which made
Everett successful as other hard working families did many types of
operations. For example, Everett had large canneries, wholesale fish,
ice operations, many shippers, repair boat-yards, and the big fish by-products done by rendering locally. Gary Tapert (Everett, WA.)

We could not have asked for a better brother in law than Tony. He was an excellent uncle to our 2 sons. He taught them the art of commercial fishing which they still respect to this day.
Tony we will miss you always.

With love, Rod & Shrley Heppell

Tony was a very good friend. A joy to be around. We shared a lot of memorable experiences through Everett High School and on to college at Western where we roomed together in a home north of Bellingham. I will always cherish those memories of my time with Tony growing up and enjoying life, both single and married, until I moved out of state in 1980 and regret only seeing Tony on a few occassions. I admired him so much that my wife and I chose him to be God Father of our son Paul.
