Barbara Jean Dana Friend, RN

Barbara Jean Dana Friend passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 3:05 p.m. surrounded by her loving family after a short bout with demon cancer. She was 84 and she had lived an exemplary life of generosity, service and kindness to others.
Barbara was born on July 24, 1928, at Everett General Hospital, third child of Jack and Eva Dana of Lake Stevens, WA. She graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 1946 and went on to complete nursing school at Everett General Hospital in 1950. Her years in nursing were exemplified by her deep compassion and the forming of bonds with her colleagues and friends that would last a lifetime.
She married Robert (Bob) Friend in April of 1951 and was blessed by the birth of her first daughter, Patricia (Patty) in 1952. At that time she was working as an industrial nurse at Weyerhauser in Everett, and then as a charge nurse at her beloved Everett General Hospital. In 1954, another blessing came along with the birth of her second daughter, Cynthia (Cindy). Theirs was a busy household with a lot of love and activity.
Barbara subsequently went to work for Scott Paper Company as an industrial nurse and her friends knew when they called they would be greeted by "First Aide, Barbara" when she answered the phone. At one point, Scott's had over 1700 employees and she knew everyone of them!
She continued at Scott's on and off for the rest of her working life. Her real love was gardening, travel, nursing and being in charge. She was known for her love of anything that comes from a garden. Her daughters and others knew her as THE ultimate source for all things garden related, a knowledge and love that was passed on from her mother.
She traveled extensively in the US and often found herself doing things she would not have dreamed of doing when she was on vacation. She loved a road trip and spent many, many hours having a great time with Bob going wherever the roads took them.
She was known for her compassionate care for friends in need. You could frequently find Barbara sitting vigil, providing comfort while others passed. She brought her skills as a nurse and her love and compassion to every situation.
Barbara was a cook and we all loved it and benefited from it. Her family knew her for her "Gramma Jam" which came from her mother's recipe and was famous in the family. She was also known for her baking, cookies, cakes, pies…you name it and Barbara could cook it!
She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Phyllis Dana and Newell Dana.
She is survived by her husband Bob of 61½ years; daughters, Patty (Ty) Wernet and Cindy (Kal) Holler; and her granddaughter, Heather Callan; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank the people of Providence Regional Medical Center and Marysville Care Center for their loving and compassionate care of our mother during this difficult time.
A celebration of life will be held at Marysville Methodist Church in Marysville on February 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
Please, no flowers, but memorials can be sent to Marysville Food Bank at 4150 88th St. NE, Marysville, WA 98270.
