Daniel Lagozzino Obituary

Dr. Daniel A. Lagozzino

Dr. Daniel Lagozzino passed away at home on April 21, 2011 with his wife of 68 years, Jeanne, at his side. Born on July 5, 1917 in Seattle, WA, to Italian immigrants, Giuseppe and Louise Lagozzino, he was the eldest of six brothers and sisters.
Dan grew up on Beacon Hill in Seattle and graduated valedictorian from Franklin High School. Dan attended the University of Washington and graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School in l943, where he served his internship and residency in pediatrics at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
During World War II, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, supervising medical care for six ships in the South Pacific and earning a battle star. After serving his country, he returned to complete his residency at Doernbecher.
Besides his wife Jeanne, he leaves behind a family of six children, daughters, Danica Cullen (Brian) of Seattle, Gail Hoekendorf (Rick) of Everett, Barbara Cummins (Dr. Robert, Sr.) of Everett, Patty Ward (Michael) of Sacramento, CA, Gina Boling (George) of Allyn, and son, John Daniel Lagozzino (Terri) of Reston, VA; grandchildren, Sean Cullen (Dayne), Erin Harris (Geoff), Michael Cullen (Erika), and Bryana Nelson (John); Nick Hoekendorf (Sadie), Jon Hoekendorf (Rebecca), Mark Hoekendorf (Christina); Angie Sievers (Pat), Bob Cummins Jr. (Anna), Jo Koshelnik (Kurt); Rachael Lagozzino, Shannon Boling (Robert Clendenden), and Kris Boling; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jane Jones of Kirkland, and numerous relatives in Seattle and Portland.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Joseph, Robert, and Ralph Lagozzino and sister Mickey Truman.
Dan's life was deliberate, focused, and driven by his passion for medicine, community service and family, coupled with his deep spiritual convictions.
Dan and Jeanne made their home in Everett in 1947 where he set up his practice caring for infants, children and teens. He took care of many citizens of Everett during the time when a doctor made house calls and answered parent calls throughout the night, as well as accompanied patients in aid cars to Children's Orthopedic. He worked six- and seven-day weeks, alternating days off with other private practice pediatricians in Everett. His children often accompanied him on hospital rounds and house calls, waiting patiently in the car or peering through windows of the hospital nurseries to see the new babies. Dan enjoyed watching children grow and develop into responsible young adults, and took much interest in each of his patients.
Dan was a member of the American Medical Association, Everett Elks Club, Everett Golf and Country Club, Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Rosary Guild, Immaculate Conception Parish in Everett, Serra Club of Everett, and Quilceda Carvers. He was instrumental in the formation of the new Tridentine Latin Mass-based Catholic Parish, North American Martyrs in Ballard. He served on the staffs of both Everett General and Providence Hospitals, as well as Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Clinics in Seattle.
He served in the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Washington Medical School and Hospitals from 1948-89, and was appointed Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus in 1989. He was former president of the Snohomish County Medical Society, the Washington State Society of Pediatrics, the North Pacific Pediatric Society, and Snohomish County Boys and Girls Club and Foundation. He was a Diplomat and Fellow of the American Board of Pediatricians. He was very proud of his Gold Dedication and Tall Timber Awards from the Boys and Girl Clubs of Snohomish County, which were among the many citations received for his leadership of the organization. He was recently honored by the Boys and Girls Clubs and City of Everett for his service.
Dan was recognized by the University of Oregon for outstanding contributions to the field of medicine, and has received numerous citations for medical publications representing the Washington State Medical Association, Department of Health and Social Services in Olympia, and the Washington State Society of Pediatrics. He was a published author and co-author in local, state, and national publications pertaining to the health and welfare of children. Dan served on numerous professional and civic committees at the local, state, and national levels, providing advice and counsel for the betterment of health and welfare policies affecting family based-child education and development.
Dan retired from his medical practice in 1985. Upon retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow. He attended many school functions, athletic games, graduations, and family celebrations. His focus on family was paramount during his retirement, but he also managed to become a versatile and skilled wood carver. As a member of Quilceda Wood Carvers he enjoyed many cherished friendships. His works of art on are on display in the Marysville City Center, the City of Everett Senior Center, and the Everett Transit Station. He entered into competition throughout Washington, Oregon and Western Canada. His accomplished carving skills allowed him to serve as a judge in many carving competitions.
Dan's family wishes to thank Providence Snohomish County Hospice staff who cared for him until he passed away, especially Trinidad and Amber, who are truly "earth angels."
The family suggests memorials to Providence Snohomish County Hospice, the Building Fund for North American Martyrs Catholic Parish in Ballard, or the Snohomish County Boys and Girls Clubs.
Service on April 30, 2011 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Everett. Rosary 10:30 a.m., Mass 11 a.m. with reception following. Private burial.

there just are not enough words to convey my thoughts today. My children called me to klet me know about their "DOCTOR" and how sad they were. Dr. Dan helped me to survive three of my children suffer from polio, and He was able to see one of them in the Airforce to Vietnam war. Without Dr.Dan I know my children would not have survived to be adults. He surly has a seat on the right of our Lord. May God Bless His Family and keep them safe. With much affection

To the family of Dr Lagozzino. I would like to give my condolences and also say I have to thank Dr. Lagozzino for saving my life as a child. I have loved him for being one of the best doctors I ever had. If it wasn't for him I would of died as a very young child, but because of him I have two children of my own. He was a great man and doctor. I thank God for him every day. Patricia Chayka Steineke, Lake Goodwin as a child and Now Darrington Washington

My condolences to all. I started seeing Dr. Lagozzino in 1970 after my mother passed. I was 8 y/o and he right away recommended me to Children's in Seattle. That saved my leg and my life. Today I walk marathons. I shall never forget.

Many years ago I received much free advice, packed with wisdom from Dr, Dan. Often over the years, when in a tight spot, I tried to guess what Doc would say or do. As the sorrow you feel now passes in the coming months, you will recall more of the wonderful memories he's left you with. It will sustain you. You've been blessed to have him in your lives for so long. My sincere best wished to you all.

Dr. Dan was my first and greatest influence in medicine. He taught me what a physician should be through his gentle touch and calm demenor as early as I can remember as he was my pediatrician. I wanted to serve people just like him and I cannot thank him enough for inspiring that 8 yr old boy to go to medical school to be like Dr. Dan. May God bless him and keep him close.

Some of my earliest memories are of the good Doctor's office as he was my pediatrician growing up. While going to the office was not all that fun, as soon as he came into the room, all fears were allayed with his kind and gentle demeanor. News of his passing was unexpected. My deepest and sincerest condolences from all the members of my family to all the members of his. Our prayers and best wishes are with you always. He was deeply loved, and he will be missed.

To the Lagozzino Family,

When I think of your Dad, and your Family, it makes me smile.

We refered to your Dad warmly as Dr Dan the band aid man. He was one of the best and took excellent care of us.

I fondly recall his house visits, which always began with a quick game of hide and seek whenever my siblings and I would hear his voice at the door. It's amazing that he never developed an inferiority complex.

He was a great doctor; neighbor, family friend and Godfather.

God bless Dr Dan and the entire family.

Oh that Doctor Dan, what a man. He took care of our two boys from the time they were babies until teen years. He was ever so thoughtful, we could call him at home on the telephone, he even came to our home.

I recall him, when giving directions, saying "what I tell my parents". What a wonderful doctor and lovely human being.

Thoughts and prayers to the Lagozzino family.

"Dr. Dan the Medicine Man" . We always called him that. He took care of me and my brothers and sister throughout our childhood. I am sure there were some challenging times. I always looked forward to going to the doctor. I ended up becoming a nurse. What a wonderful, dedicated, loving and caring man. In recent years we saw him at the fair. God must have felt his work here was done. May God Bless and keep you during this difficult time.
