Elda Humphrey Obituary

Elda Jeanette "Jan" Humphrey

Jan Humphrey left all of those who loved her at sunrise, June 12, 2012. Jan was born July 23, 1930 in Prosser, WA to Elda and Frank Stephenson.
She grew up on a wheat ranch in Benge, WA. She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy, then attended both Washington State and Oregon State Universities. While at WSU she met the love of her life, Russ Humphrey, they married in 1950. They moved to Olympia, WA where they restored a house on the bay, then relocated to Marysville, WA in 1961 where they built their dream house and raised their sons, Scott, Clark and Todd. In 1969, Jan opened her antique shop "Another Antique Shop" in Snohomish, WA where she remained for the next 20 years. Jan and Russ enjoyed their collection of antique cars which they drove to California and Colorado many times. Jan was a garage sale wizard! She would swoop in, gather anything of value and be gone in a flash. If you ever had a question about antiques, Jan was the one to call. Jan was a friend of Bill W., celebrating 39 years of recovery in February. She touched many lives, and was truly an inspiration to all of us. Jan was a thirteen year survivor of breast cancer, refusing chemo and radiation and opting for a healthier life style. She was also a non-smoker for over 25 years and helped many others break the habit. Jan was a true survivor, meeting every challenge with courage and a never failing sense of humor.
She was predeceased by her husband, Russ in 2005; and by her parents.
She is survived by her three sons; and a close cousin, Merna.
There will be potluck at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012 followed by a celebration of Jan's life at Evergreen Unitarian Church (downstairs), 1607 Fourth St., Marysville.
Jan truly ran the race, finished the course and kept the faith.

I was so sorry to hear of Jeanette's passing. Russel John was my mom's nephew, so we were all related. When I was about eleven, Jeanette invited me to Olympia to care for her first and new baby. It was a very special week for me. That would have been in about 1955-57. Such a gracious and truly lovely woman in every way. And they seemed very happy. They would often come to our house in Ballard for Thanksgiving dinner. It was always a treat to see her. A little over a year ago, my sister Karen and I drove to Marysville to visit. We bought some things from her recent finds, and now I treasure them all the more. Wonderful person, and I am proud to be part of her family!

Janette's son Todd and my son Todd were in the same class way back when. Janette and I had many cups of coffee back then and told all kinds of stories about whatever. She will be missed by many that knew her.

It was always a pleasure to stop and share our love of antiques together. She knew so much and was so willing to help all of us in the business.

The first antique I ever bought was from Jan. I became an antique dealer myself and was invited into her home. Her knowledge was perfection and she had a fun spirit. She will be missed.

Humphrey family,
I am so sorry to hear about your MOM passing away. I had the pleasure of getting to know Jan thru Bud Barton's Glass and have missed her these past couple years. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
