Elsie Hemstrom

Elsie Hemstrom passed away on February 7, 2013. She was born July 23, 1926 to Annie and Rolf Skrinde in Stanwood, Washington. She grew up in East Stanwood and attended the old Lincoln High School.
Elsie worked for a short time for Mel and Edna Burrel at the Central Cafe in Stanwood. After that she was employed by Ed and Marie Bryant as a salesgirl at the Bryant Hardware Store in Stanwood. Everyone knew and liked Elsie and she was the "Farmer's Friend", having much knowledge of farm equipment and all the necessary parts. Everyone appreciated her laughter and energy and she truly kept the place buzzing.
She met the love of her life, Carl Hemstrom, at a Scandinavian dance at Normanna Hall in Everett. It was love at first sight and Elsie and Carl married on August 19, 1951. They lived in Everett for a time before building their dream house on the Hemstrom Farm in Granite Falls.
Carl was a Railroad Engineer, so was gone from home long hours and Elsie drove the tractor on the farm, mending fences and hauling heavy hay bales out to their many beef cattle. She helped the cows with their calving and was the all-around farm lady besides many years of volunteering at her two son's schools, raising a big garden, canning hundreds of jars of fruits and vegetables and always seeing that wonderful big meals were on the table for Carl and her two sons. There was always a fresh pie in her refrigerator or cooling on her back porch. No matter what her task at the moment, Elsie always looked beautiful and her husband was always proud of her.
She made wonderful and life-long friends and was always fun to be around. She would help anyone in need and was always bringing food and comfort to her friends in times of need or crisis.
Elsie was pre-deceased by her parents, three brothers, Colben, Raymond and Eivend Skrinde, one baby sister, two nephews, and her loving Husband,Carl in 2004.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry (Lanai) Hemstrom of Granite Falls, and Jeff Hemstrom of Granite Falls, one sister, Anna (Bill) Bowron of Mount Vernon and brothers, Erling Skrinde of Stanwood, Einar Skrinde of Snohomish and Rolf (Marge) Skrinde of Seattle and sister in law Betty Skrinde of Stanwood, Grandchildren, Janna, Kelsie and Colt, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial Services will be Feb. 16th at Christ Community Church 11:00am. 401 Wabash Ave Granite Falls, 98252. In lieu of flowers please make donation to GF Foodbank in memory of Elsie if you wish.
