Helen Dawes Obituary

Helen Ida (Marks) Dawes

Helen Dawes died on June 2, 2011, at home surrounded by family. She was born on the family farm in Cando, North Dakota, on August 13, 1934, and the family moved to Alderwood Manor when she was five years old. Her parents, Leslie Marks and Helen (Botz) Marks, eventually settled in Edmonds, WA and raised Helen and her four sisters, Mary Alice, Linnie, Patricia, Leslie and brother, Mike.
Helen married Bruce Dawes on January 1, 1954, and together they raised five children. Helen worked as a waitress and then in the Fred Meyer service center until her retirement. Bruce died on January 30, 1999.
Helen is survived by her siblings; her five children, Mary, Jerry (Lilly), Ralph (Cheryl), Juli (Glenn), and David (Dana); and her ten grandchildren, Danny (Dalise), Analisa, Whitney, Iris, Hannah, Heather (Benito), Carina, Ben, Jessica (Tor) and Jenny (Karl); and three great grandchildren, Dune, Lars and Odin.
She was independent and practical, loved to read, was curious about life, questioned authority, and was a loving mother and grandmother. Her favorites were cooking for family and friends, and playing bridge.

A treasured friend, devoted duplicate bridge partner, upstanding role model--I miss her.

Helen was my valued duplicate bridge partner and--as she put it--"partner in crime". If I ever mentioned the inequity of something, she would answer,"We are the soldiers." I will miss her every day. Verna Baker

I looked upon Helen as one of the intellectuals of our class of "52".
She was a very smart girl who all her classmates looked up to. My sincere condolences to the family.

I am so sorry to hear about your Mother's passing. She was my "other" mom when I was growing up. I remember all the wonderful meals around the Dawes kitchen table. I also remember the fabulous crab louis salad feasts your mom would invite me to partake in...I love you guys and wish I could be at her Memorial service. Love from, Nancy (Hendrickson) and Neal Rosner

Jerry, Lilly and family, I take my Mom out once a week on Wednesday to the Buzz on Inn in Everett. I occasionally run into Gary Gross and he informed me of your mothers passing. He mentioned that your mom picked up him and a friend when they were hitch hiking to Sun Lakes. He wanted me to mention that she was nice enough to do that and he always remembered it. I remember your mom when we were kids and she was always nice to me. She hired me to wash dishes at the Pine Cone once and I ended up working at the same store at Lynnwood Fred Meyer, where she always would cash my check and give me the lowdown on you guys. I remember she was well liked by everyone at the store. I am deeply sorry for your loss, take care and God Bless. Steve Leslie
