Kathryn Trumbull Obituary

Aug. 27, 1937 - March 10, 2017 Kay Trumbull, age 79, passed away on March 10, 2017. Kay was born and raised in Seattle, WA, and graduated from Ballard High School. She attended Shoreline Community College for an AA Degree and the University of Washington for both a BS Degree in Psychology and a Juris Doctor. Kay worked in the Snohomish County Prosecutor's office from 1973 to 1981, serving the last few years as Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor. She then opened her own law practice in Everett. In 1988 she was appointed as a Snohomish County Super-ior Court Commissioner. In 1990, then Governor Booth Gardner appointed her to serve as Snohomish County Superior Court's first female judge. In that capacity, she earned a reputation of being fair, independent and tough-minded among prosecutors and defense attorneys. Among the awards and honors she received are Judge of the Year from the Snohomish County Bar Association and Wall of Recognition Honoree at Ballard High School. Kay retired in 1999 then continued to work part-time as a Judge Pro-Tem for a number of years. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Ruie Skinner. She is survived by her children: Larry Trumbull (Rika), Sue Camber (Al) and Patti Blue (Curtis); grandchildren: April, Angela, Ashley, Michelle, Max, and Marcus; great grandchildren: Dylan, Abigail, Annabella, Nevaeh, Kinley, and Ellie; and her sister, Pat Christian. Kay was smart, determined and independent, setting an extraordinary example for all of us. She was our rock and our biggest supporter. She had many treasured friends and friends who are now part of our family. She loved Husky football, traveling, winning slot machines, playing cards, keeping active through YMCA Silver-Sneakers, cats, and her favorite "cat-dog", Lily. We welcome you to a Celebration of Kay's Life at the Snohomish Senior Center on 506 Fourth Street on Saturday, March 25th from 2-5:00 p.m. In her honor, everyone is invited to wear Husky purple - tshirts and sweatshirts welcome! In lieu of flowers, we know she'd appreciate memorial donations to the YMCA of Snohomish County, Dawson Place,or the Everett Gospel Mission. www.ymca-snoco.org/social-responsibility/Give/Donate.ashx?p=1583http://dawsonplace.org/?page_id=20www.egmission.org/donatenow/

Judge Trumbull was a trailblazer for women in the legal profession and a great mentor. I will always treasure her advice, counsel and sense of humor. As a judge, she was honest, fair and had great insight. I will never forget the stern looks she would give parents from the bench if they did anything that jeopardized their children's safety. She cared so much about our community. She will be greatly missed.

I've never had a better, closer friend than Kay. She filled that role for 40 years, and saying that I will miss her is a HUGE understatement. I grieve for all of her extended family members. Kay raised three wonderful children and they have raised wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren: a fine legacy indeed!

So sorry to hear about Kay. She represented me once prior to her becoming a judge. She was an excellent attorney and I am sure Judge as well. She was a great Lady and Highly respected!

I had the honor of training under Judge Trumbull when I first became a clerk. I was young and just starting out. I couldn't have asked for a better person and woman as a role model. I did not realize how very lucky I was to be put in that position. She was very generous and I will never forget her love for animals. She will certainly be missed.

I always respected Kay for what she achieved as a single parent. She was a friend and I will miss so very much. It is with heavy heart that I have to say RIP my special friend. You touched a lot of people in your life and each and everyone of them will remember the wonderful and beautiful person you were.

Kay was a prosecutor in our court way back in the day. She was a great prosecutor and later Superior Court Judge. A great woman! She will be missed!

Kay was a remarkable woman who opened a lot of doors for a bunch of remarkable young women to become lawyers and judges. Added to that was the fact that she was just a damn fine human being.

I had the opportunity to work with Kay while she was at Dave Patterson's office. She was a wonderful, smart, fun, warm person. We had similar tastes in reading material and would often discuss our most recent "finds." She will be missed by many. Sincere condolences to her family.
