Laurie Bashour Obituary

Laurie Jean Bashour (Vanderhyde)

Beloved mother and friend Laurie Jean Bashour (Vanderhyde), 67, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2011 surrounded by her family.
Born and raised in Snohomish, WA, she often fondly recalled her childhood there dressing up her dog Myrtle, playing violin in the family creamery and visiting Grandpa Maitland's shoe shop on Avenue A. She studied violin with Gene Nastry of Everett and traveled to Europe in 1961 with the Walla Walla Grande Ronde orchestra. After graduating from high school in 1962, she attended Willamette University in Portland, OR. As a young woman, she spent a summer working and hiking at Mt. Ranier. She also lived and worked in Alaska for a short time. In the early 70's she met and fell in love with Louis Bashour. They married in 1972 and raised three children together, living in Everett, Seattle and Bothell until she became a single mother when he passed away in 1988. Throughout her life, music was a source of comfort and joy. After playing classical violin for many years she turned to folk music in the late 80's, starting an Irish folk-dance band called Fat Chance. The band spent several years together playing at local dance halls and the NW Folklife Festival. In her later years, she enjoyed looking after her grandchildren, baking, quilting, and visiting with friends.
Laurie was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend who left us too soon. Among the many things we will miss are her phone calls, the little gifts she would give, the treats she baked and the warmth and humor she so generously shared with all of us.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish many wonderful memories: her children, Rebecca (Todd), Louis (Vanessa) and Margie; grandchildren, Amanda, Shayla and Oliver; brother, Ken (Sharon); and sisters, Ann (Darryl), Carol (David), Patty and Cindy; a large extended family; and friends too numerous to count.
All who wish to attend are welcome at the celebration of Laurie's life which will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 State Street, in Kirkland, WA at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2011.

Laurie was like a second mom to me also. I think I spent more time in M-101 than at my own house. The fact that she put up with Louie and my shenanigans through the years automatically makes her one of the strongest moms ever. She will be missed, and so will her world famous cackle! I will always remember when she nicknamed me "Mattalink". I don't know how she thought of it, but I'll always be proud of it. Thanks for the memories Laurie!---Matt, Tina, and all of the Haas family.

To Laurie's family: I'm so sorry that your mother is gone so soon. I remember long phone calls in high school. We reconnected a few years ago and started having long calls again. Some things never change and that is a delight. Life wasn't always easy for Laurie but her love for her family was always strong. I loved her.

To my cousins I love so much and my Aunt Laurie who's smile and cackling laugh will be missed so much. Your music, your smile, the way you could find happiness even in the toughest times...and the incredible legacy you leave in your beautiful children and the hearts they each have. You have Brandma Bettys strength...her smile and the ability to make people smile...your Mom was so proud of you and so are the rest of us....
I love you...and will miss you...Heather

To Lauries" children Ann and Ken and grandchildren. I was so sorry to read that Laurie had passed away. I also will always have very fond memories of Laurie. We played the violin together for many many years under the direction of Gene Nastri. I think I knew Laurie my entire life as my parents were friends of Lauries Parents and we spent a lot of time together. Over the last 12 years we have had wonderful luncheons together with some of our school Girlfriends. I am so glad that we were able to have those special times together. She will rest peacefully now and wait for the rest of us to arrive. God Bless you Laurie jean. Love to all, Susan Hays Gutierrez
