Robert G. Sluman
Robert G. Sluman passed away May 7, 2011 at the age of 82.
He was born in 1928 in Reed Point, MT to William and Evangeline (Gagen) Sluman.
Bob graduated from Arlington High School in 1946. He then joined the Army and served in Japan during the occupation until 1948. When he returned home, Bob enrolled in Everett Community College, earning his Associates in Chemistry. He went to work for Weyerhauser in the Research and Development lab and retired from there in 1985 after 30 years of service.
Bob married Norma Smith in Arlington. They had one child, a daughter. He and Norma later divorced.
Bob married Judith Cade of Longview, WA in Las Vegas in 1974. Judith survives him at home. Also surviving are his daughter, G. Alex Styve of Longview; his step-daughter, Janice Nolte and her husband, John, of Longview. He is also survived by his brother, Bill and sister-in-law, Beverly, of Ellensburg, WA.
His sister, Elaine Meyer, of Seattle preceded him in death.
Bob was a kind and gentle man who loved to have a good time with his many friends and family. He and Judy belonged to many organizations including the Elks and the Eagles.
Bob met Judy on the Kelso golf course, they enjoyed many years of golf together thereafter. They kicked up their heels with the "Square and Circles" Square Dance group and did water aerobics with the "Splashers" at the YMCA. Bob was happy to be a volunteer at St. John's Hospital for 10 years until his illness.
In 1990 Bob and Judy sold their home in Longview, bought a motorhome and traveled the U.S. They always, however, seemed to be back in town for their grandchildren's sports games. After nine years of traveling they settled back in Kelso, and traveled to El Centro, CA for the winter months. Later they joined the Good Sam "Sneekers" RV travel club where they enjoyed many good times.
Bob loved and was loved by his grandson, Sam. He also loved and was loved by all of his step-grandchildren, Michael, Lisa, Brenton, Ty, Cordon, Weston, Steven and Jerod; and his one great-granddaughter, Shelby Lyn.
There will be a memorial and celebration of life held at the Kelso Elks Monday, May 16, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Longview Hospice.
