Robert Wuflestad Obituary

Robert James Wuflestad

Robert James Wuflestad, age 92, of Camano Island, WA passed away on April 23, 2011. Bob was a kind and considerate gentleman of strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ who consistently honored God with his actions and his words. He loved his family dearly and always had a genuine interest in the lives of his family, friends and former students. Bob was born on June 26, 1918 in Cooperstown, North Dakota to Norwegian immigrants Krag Peder and Anne Pedersen Wuflestad. He moved from North Dakota to the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA in 1927 when his father was called to pastor the Norwegian Salem Evangelical Free Church. Bob graduated from Ballard High School in 1936. Following high school, he worked in the sheet metal business in Seattle and on commercial fishing boats in Alaska to earn money for college. In 1939, he enrolled in the School of Engineering at the University of Minnesota and attended there until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Saturday, December 6, 1941. He was assigned to the Navy's first Construction Battalion and served as a Naval Officer in the South Pacific until 1945. On a brief leave from the Navy in 1945, Bob married Gudrun Vevang, whom he had known since childhood from church. After the war he enrolled at Seattle Pacific College to complete his degrees, graduating with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1949 and a B. Ed. in 1950. He later received his M.A. in Education from the University of Washington. He began his career with the Seattle Public Schools in 1950 as a math teacher and later served as vice principal at Lincoln High School and as principal at Whittier Elementary School. He was an active long-time member of United (formerly Salem) Evangelical Free Church. Following retirement in 1985, Bob and Gudrun moved to Camano Island where they enjoyed many good times with family and friends. Two years after Gudrun's death, at age 81, Bob married Betty J. Smith in 2000. Bob and Betty were blessed with nearly eleven years together.
Bob is survived by his wife, Betty; his three daughters, Karen (Alfred) Lunde, Gina (Robert) Thorstenson and Lisa Wuflestad; and his eight grandchildren, Kristina (Rick) Hagemeier, Larry (Kristen) Lunde, Martin Lunde, Andrew (Devany) Lunde and Sylvi, Magnus, Ingrid and Robert Gunnar Thorstenson. He is also survived by his eight great-grandchildren, Annika, Nathan and Kristian Hagemeier, Bergen, Halle and Mae Lunde, and Kallen and Anna Lunde. He leaves step-children, Judi (Nick) Seegert and Mick (Karen) Smith; as well as their children and grandchildren.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at United Evangelical Free Church, 1420 N.W. 80th Street, Seattle, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Evangelical Free Church or the Union Gospel Mission.

Gina, Karen, and Lisa -
Our prayers are with your family as you celebrate your dad's life today. Your father could only be proud of his kind generous daughters who share so much with others. If I don't see you at the service, know I'm there in spirit, hoping you find smiles in the good memories.

To the family of Mr. Wuflestad,
He was a wonderful principal at Whittier and he impacted my life with his kindness and firm hand. He was well respected by all the students. He seemed to know all the kids and had a smile for each one. What a blessing he was.

Dear Wufflestad Family, Heartfelt sympathy as you farewell a loved one. On seeing the name in the Herald, I thought of the friendship of my parents, the late Pastor Jens and Johanna Johanson, with the previous generation of Wufflestads in North Dakota. I have a family photo of the "Rev.Wufflestad family in Fargo, ND". It is a picture of the parents with three young daughters and two sons. If this might be your family, I would be happy to send the picture to you. God's Peace and Comfort, Elisabeth Johnson, 425-252-2508.

Dear Karen, Gina & Lisa. I have met you girls a time or two over the recent years when your Dad was hospitalized. I have always enjoyed your Dad very much. He was always such a gentleman even when he wasn't feeling well. My son and husband remember seeing him on the golf course at Camaloch and enjoyed his wit. He will be missed and I hope you find comfort in knowing that others share in the loss. In our prayers at this time. The Cabes

Dear Karen, Gina, & Lisa,

I did not know your father, but I wanted to offer you my sympathy in his passing.

I worked for Dr. MacGeorge many years ago and knew the three of you from the office. It has been a long time, but I remember all three of you well.

My husband and I live on Camano Island. We attend the same church that Judy Seegert attended when she lived on the Island.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sorrow. Your father was sure a fine looking man.

God's Blessings,
Mary & Darrell Jones, Camano Island, WA

Dear Lunde and Wuflelstad family: Our memories of Bob go back many years...when our children were at Whittier grade school. I always felt blessed that he watched out for our kids. What a legacy he leaves. We were very blessed to have known him. We pray for your families at this time and look forward to seeing you at the service at church. Many blessings for all of you. Al & Karen and Family, As we remember Mr. Wuflestad, keep in mind all the people he touched and the better this world is because of him. As we say goodbye to a man who had a huge family who loved him, remember all the good times, all the laughter, all the memories and may that help to ease the sorrow you are feeling today.
