Vernon Haines Obituary

Vernon P. "Bud" Haines

Everett native Vernon P. "Bud" Haines passed away May 26, 2011 at age 85.
Bud was born at Everett General on July 27, 1925, the second child of Vernon Reed and Ada Pringle Haines. He graduated from Everett High in 1943, attended the University of Denver and then served 29 months in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He returned to Everett in 1946 and enrolled at Everett Junior College. Later that year, he met the love of his life, Norma Zee Robinson, at a dance. They were engaged the following Easter and married at Trinity Episcopal Church on Halloween, 1947.
In 1953 - on the day his first son was born - he joined K&H Printers as a salesman. In 1969, Bud and Norma bought the company. They were parents to six children by then, but Norma joined him at K&H. Together, they grew the business, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008.
Even as a business owner and busy father of six, Bud found time to be active in the community. He served on the Vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church, was an active member of the Everett Rotary and volunteered for the Everett Housing Authority. He and Norma were members of Everett Golf and Country Club for more than 50 years.
But Bud's number one focus was his family. Bud, Norma and their kids spent summers at their cabin on Warm Beach, where they made life-long friendships and many happy memories. They also enjoyed boating and camping. Bud and Norma often packed all six kids into their boat for trips to the San Juan Islands and beyond.
Bud's other hobbies included golf and carpentry. After he retired, Bud built a small golf course, called "Bumpa's Run," at the couple's beach home on Priest Point. And, ever the tinkerer, Bud was known to take on any home-improvement project – big or small.
In business and in life, Bud was a competitor. When he and Norma lived in View Ridge, he formed a pickleball league with the neighborhood men. Their early-morning games were always lively. For many years, the Haines family competed in a "Big Tomato" growing contest. Later, they raced zucchini cars. There was never a dull moment.
Bud will be remembered for his humor, honesty, strong work ethic and devotion to God and family.
Bud is survived by Norma, his wife of 63 years; and their six children, Kathy (Michael) Dench, Pat (Mike) Fournier, Rob (Annette) Haines, Dave (Yvonne) Haines, Dick (Lisa) Haines and Jim (Jana) Haines. In addition, "Bumpa" leaves behind 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (with two more on the way). He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Arnold Newman; stepsister, Arlene Robinson; and nieces, Cheryl (Fred) Moll and Nancy (Alan) Anderson.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Ada Haines; stepmother, Evelyn Anderson Haines; brother-in-law, George Arnold; and niece, Sally Fleury.
A celebration of Bud's life will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Everett. Bud's cremains will be interred in the columbarium at Trinity.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Providence Hospice and Homecare of Snohomish County, who lovingly cared for Bud during his final weeks, Trinity Episcopal Church or a charity of the giver's choice.

I worked at Pacific Grinding Wheel in the 1970s & Bud would come in & I would order wheel labels from him. He was always so friendly & kind. I am so sorry for your loss. Also, I graduated with Pat at CHS.

Chamber on the Move

June 2, 2011

Norma & family- my thought are with you all. As a novice photographer told to 'GET THAT SHOT', I met Bud on the fly bridge of his powerboat. I was to photograph the barging of the Weyerhaeuser Mill office under the 'vertical lift' bridge set on Hwy 529. As the rivers tide was going out, amid the enormous flotilla of other boats, joshing for position on the 'bad side ' of the bardge and the deafning roar of news helicoptors overhead, Bud called out, "Where do we go, Jim ?"
I responed ," Bud , stay where you are, drag anchor ! ", while loading two different cameras for 'slides' & 'B&W'".
The rest is History, as my photograph, "Chamber on the Move " & my deep ADMIRATION for Bud Haines, was born that day! I Always think of him , seeing that photograph!
All my Best,
Jim arrabito
