William Carpenter Obituary

William D. Carpenter

William D. Carpenter passed away peacefully at home attended by his daughters and wife on March 18, 2011. He was born in Minneapolis, MN on June 26, 1917. He lived in Everett most of his life.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, who passed away in December, 2000; and their daughter, Cynthia.
He leaves his loving wife, Billie; son, Jeffrey; son, Gregory and wife, Kathy; daughter, Mary Milner; daughter, Susan Dawson and husband, Jerry; plus seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Also his stepdaughter, Mary DeMoss and husband, Lanny; stepson, Dean Torkelson and wife, Roseann; his sister, Jackie Minor and husband, Hugh; and his sister-in-law, Blanche Carpenter; plus several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Bill attended Everett High School and organized many reunions for the class of 1934. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1941 and was an avid Huskies fan and knew all the words to the fight song, enthusiastically leading us to all sing along with him. After World War II, where he served as a naval supply officer, he joined Ed and Harry Stuchell at the Eclipse Mill until May, 1962 when it was destroyed by fire. He was then chosen to be chairman of the newly formed Bank of Everett where he remained until it was sold in 1981.
Bill served as president of the YMCA in 1954, chairman of the United Way in 1966 and was on the Providence Hospital Board for several years. Since 2001, while in his spry eighties, he was a volunteer at Bethany at Silver Lake sharing his positive attitude and more than a few games of cribbage with the "old timers." He loved cribbage, and competing in general, and considered himself tops in the game. He was nicknamed Willie the Weep by some of his closest friends as a humorous way to relate to him when he lost, which was less often than not. He loved people and gave generously of his time and support to family, friends and community.
Bill and Billie have had the good fortune of living adjacent to the Everett Golf and Country Club where they spent much of their leisure time. The story is that Bill's mother, Helen Stuchell Carpenter, helped to plant the first trees when the golf course was in its beginning stages. Bill's two favorite active sports were golf and tennis, which he played well into his eighties.
Family would like to extend a heart filled thanks to Providence Hospice of Snohomish County and the loving care and support provided by his nurse, Pippa.
He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian church of Everett where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 26. A reception will follow where we will commune and celebrate his long and meaningful life.
Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice.

I remember "Banker Bill" from his time at Emerald Heights. He absolutely loved my daughter Lexie, liking to play with her in the pool any chance he could get. Uncle Bill was "man on campus" there. He was probably the most active "senior" at Emerald Heights, playing any sport he could find: shuffle board, bocce ball, ping pong, pickle ball and of course, chatting with the ladies. He had a magnetic personality. Joanne didn't know him well but she cares for him and will share flowers. I have a framed picture of him with Lexie in my study. We love Uncle Bill. He will always be in our memories. xoxo

Uncle Bill's passing brings back memories of Mom's talking about those wonderful days growing up in Everett surrounded by family, living just across the street from Bill, Ted and Jackie. Such a busy, rich, happy time for all! When my brother and sisters and I were out in Everett for Mom's memorial service, Bill generously took us all out to eat at the Country Club. Such a fun host!! My condolences to all the family!! Love from Cindy Jergensen (daughter of Mary Jane Carpenter Skewis)

There are so many memories I have shared with Uncle Bill that I will cherish forever; from when he visited my kindergarten class and showed everyone the Ghost Dance to swimming in the pool at Emerald Heights, and even when he said he was proud of me for not eating my french fries first (a big obstacle for an eight year old). Uncle Bill was possibly the most light-hearted man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I will never forget his kindness and love he gave me, and he will remain dear in my heart forever.

Thanks to Uncle Bill, I worked at Eclipse Mill during my summer break from college in 1961. One of my jobs, which took a week, was to move Carpenter stuff from Mermont Dr. to their new house on Grand. 4+ years later, when in law school in Salem, I attended the Husky-Duck football game in Portland. Guess who came up to me outside Multnomah Stadium, before the game, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and white bucks? Bill was a generous, gregarious, genuine leader who his second oldest nephew will remember fondly forever.

Uncle Bill will always be a bright candle in my memories of family gatherings. He always made sure everyone was included in whatever the game or activity. My thoughts are with Billie and my Carpenter cousins.

Sue, I'm so sorry to read of your father's death, but he certainly had a rich and full life! He was such a good friend and neighbor to us on Laurel Drive; all of those rides to school in high school, and later, at the bank, helping me work out the financing to move from Everett to start a job in New York City.

Billie & entire "Clan",
Although knowing Uncle Bill my entire life and thinking I have been an expert on this smily, fine gentlemen, I've been surprised by things I've learned in his obit. and guest book. After playing golf with and against him for 60 yrs., working for him in college, living next door on Rucker Hill..... only now do I learn he was not an Everett native, that he was the true uncle to so many, that he was one week older than my Mom (his school mate and true Everett native, along with Billie); but, most surprising, after thinking I have been maybe the world's cribbage champion for +/- 55 yrs, I might not have even been Snohomish County champ- this is the first I ever knew Bill played crib!!! :-)

I met Bill only twice and spoke with him on the phone only a few times. But even those brief encounters made a deep impression on me. I know members of his family and am very much aware of how much they loved him and how much he loved them.He was always there for his family and his community. He was a stand-up guy in all things and his family, his community, and his friends will miss him very much. So will I.

Billie and family, I am sorry for your loss. What a character! I remember not too long ago, a party at my parents house. Bill wore bright plaid pants, and shoes that he had spray painted GOLD!!

Here's one snipet about Uncle Bill: I lived out of the area until just recently, and hadn't had contact with him or the family for a couple years. Then, about 6 months ago, out of the blue, I get a phone call from Uncle Bill, simply calling to say Hi and to catch up a bit and make sure "Stevie" (age 59) was doing okay... His joyous personality and positive approach to everything was an example for all of us. Everyone ought to have an Uncle Bill.

I was a kid during the summer of 1964 and a bunch of the "adults" at Hermosa Beach were having a party. Bill Carpenter dressed up like Barry Goldwater, he was a dead wringer look alike! Because it was a presidential election year, and Goldwater was running for President, some of the other residents thought the real candidate was there for a political function. He was great, played the role, totally in character. I will always remember Bill as a very nice person. My thoughts and prayers are with the wonderful Carpenter family.

My Great Uncle Bill was simply an unbelievable human being. He lived vibrantly and was always so generous and loving with his family. I'll greatly miss soaking up his unique energy over games of cribbage.

Billie and Family: It seems like I've known of "Banker" Bill Carpenter nearly all my life. When I was learning to play golf with my dad as a young boy, Bill's colorful golf clothes made him a stand-out on the course; as an adult I appreciated seeing his easy smile, genuine friendliness and high energy. He was a uniquely gifted man and will be much missed.
