William Baker Obituary

William W. Baker

William W. Baker, was born on August 21, 1940 and passed away at home with his family on January 17, 2011. He was born to Joseph and Roberta Hartman Baker in Seward, Nebraska and grew up on a farm where his family owned a creamery. The family moved to Marysville, WA in 1946 and relocated to the West Casino Road area in Everett, one year later. The Bakers lived in that neighborhood for many years where Bill attended Roosevelt Elementary School. He delivered The Herald newspaper in his neighborhood for many years (including the year the Herald building burned and papers had to be delivered late in the evening after being brought up from Seattle).
He maintained many friends from the neighborhood and from South Junior High School throughout his life. Bill developed many more lifelong relationships as he attended Everett High School where he held many leadership roles and graduated in 1958. While there, he received a National Merit Scholarship which allowed him to attend Stanford University. He graduated from Stanford in 1962 and the University of Washington Law School in 1965. Following law school, Bill worked as a law clerk at the Washington State Supreme Court before he returned to Everett to join the Anderson Hunter law firm.
Bill valued his colleagues in the law firm and had mutual respect in the regional legal community. He held leadership roles in many community organizations. In 1990, he was appointed by Governor Gardner to be a judge on the Washington State Court of Appeals, where he served until his retirement in 2008. Following his retirement he worked in mediation and arbitration until December 2010. He maintained an active interest in the law through the American Judicature Society (improving access to justice).
Bill's life was filled with friends and associates, his poker group, fishing partners, book clubs, racquetball friends at the YMCA, and many more. The center point of the last 26 years of his life was his home at Decatur NW in the San Juan Islands where he and his wife, Judy, and partners, Dean and Sandy Nichols, were surrounded by many wonderful friends.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy; children, Ryan W. Baker and Monica Janus; son-in-law, Daniel Packard; and grandchildren, Amber J. Baker and Ryan Baker Jr.; as well as brothers, Steven Baker (Barbie), and Scott Baker (Dina); and his sister, Bonnie Camacho (Eduardo).
He was predeceased by his beloved older brother, Boyd B. Baker; and his parents.
He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Jane Collins, Mike and Cathy Deller, Ben Collins and Steven Pelton, Peg and Mick Doheny, Kay Forsythe, Peggy Baker; and many other nieces; and nephews.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 25 at the Rose Hill Community Center at 304 Lincoln Avenue, Mukilteo, WA.

Dear Judy and family,

I was so sorry to hear about bill's passing. He was always such a great guy.

I know that this is going to be a really hard time for you. I just lost my
husband of 451/2 years Dec 12, 2009.

They're going to tell you it gets easier
with time, but I've found the to be
wrong. You can't be with someone that
long and get over it easily.

There are going to be days that you feel
you can't go on, but you will. And
days when you don't even want to get out
of bed, don't, you have to do what is best for you. And if you feel like crying, then (CRY). II'm not trying
to make this sound dis-hearting, but
it all takes time and each one of does
our greavy in different ways.

So keep your chin up and know that there
are friends around you. You take care.

Love, Jo Ellen (Nelson) Blair 360-794-8374

Bill was a dear family friend on Decatur and I still can't believe he has passed. He forever changed my life when he married my husband and I in July 2009. He had always been the one that would marry me...ever since I was 3 years old! I couldn't have imagined anyone else to marry us, it was so special. Judy, you are in my thoughts and I hope to see you on the island this summer.

I will always remember Bill and be greatful for his guidance when i began my legal career as a paralegal. Not only was he a wizard when it came to the law, he was also a wizard at playing hearts and spades! I will cherish the hours spent around the Anderson-Hunter lunch table playing cards, laughing and joking and just talking about life. My condolences and warmest wishes to Judy and the rest of Bill's family. He will be sorely missed. Much love to you Bill Baker.

last night on the Island...

Dear Uncle Bill and Aunt Judy and Family, I will be thinking of you. I will always treasure last Summer on the Island with him on his last birthday. I will have a smile on my face every time I play UNO... he was a good player! but what was more amazing to me was his ability to play bacci ball with a full glass of wine in his hand and not losing a single drop. I was lucky to have him in my life...

The news of Bills passing was a quite a blow to hear. However I know he’s now no longer in pain. Bill was my father in-law and truly like a father to me in so many ways. I will never forget that it was he who spent time with me on the morning of 9/11 notifying me by phone and staying on the phone with me while we both watched the horror of it. He remained on the phone with me as long as it took to get over the initial shock of what was happening. All the while he remained calm. It's something we shared albeit a tragedy, he was the person I was sharing the initial shock of something that changed our country forever. I will always remember how warmly he and Judy received my son Chris and I into their family. He was a big help to me both before and during the time when I attended the Law and Diversity program at Fairhaven College, WWU. He always made time to look over my legal analysis papers for classes. I will forever miss the wonderful family times we had at the "cabin", the warm weekly family Sunday dinners with Bill at the grill as well as our lively traditional holidays. Bill and Judy both helped me so much especially when I lost so much of my family. Bill helped to fill the void when I lost my father. Bill had a keen sense of humor and is and was a stellar person. His exemplarily service to the community and to the state is and was an inspiration to me as well as to so many others. My condolences and warmest wishes go out to Judy and the rest of the family and his many friends. He is sorely missed and shall be for a very long time to come. He has left his very honorable and lasting legacy in our community and state.
With love,
Kathy Teehan-Scott (FKA Baker)

I will remember Judge Baker for his great intellect, his compassion, and the enthusiastic, playful spirit that endeared him to everyone who knew him well. Perhaps most of all, I will miss our annual Husky/Stanford bet and the endless ribbing that went along with it. My sincere condolences to the Baker family.
