Mark Mathis Obituary

SSG Mark Aaron Mathis

It deeply saddens us to announce the passing of SSG Mark Aaron Mathis. On June 26, 2010 Mark passed away at his home in San Tan Valley, Arizona after a three year battle with injuries and illnesses received in Afghanistan during the support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Mark became a casualty of war.
Mark is survived by his mother, Judy Price; father, Jim Mathis; step-mother, Susan Hansberry-Mathis; two daughters, Sierra and Elaine Mathis; step-son, Marcus Close; sister, Jamie Mathis and brother-in-law, Gordon Nellis; brother, Reed Mathis and sister-in-law, Debbie Drake Mathis; step-sister, Emily Hudon and extended family, Elaine, Jim and Jeremy Copeland; countless aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and too many friends to list.
Mark was preceded in death by grandparents, Talmadge and Lucille Mathis and Marv and Elaine Sanders.
Mark was born September 2, 1971 in Everett Washington. At age four, with his adoring family, he moved to Sequim, Washington. He made many friends through his participation in sports, fishing, hunting and simply being Mark. He was a 1990 graduate of Sequim High School. After high school he went on to attend the College of Southern Idaho on a track and field scholarship. Upon graduation from college Mark started a family. Throughout his life his children always remained his top priority. Mark proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1999 until present, where he made hundreds of friends, whom he dearly loved.
Mark was laid to rest in Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.
A celebration of Mark's life will be held at 6:00p.m., on Saturday, July 17 at 12329 48th Drive NE, Marysville, WA 98271. Mark's family extends an invitation to all family, friends and comrades to join them in this celebration.
Please keep Mark's family, friends and fellow soldiers in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time

I am a Fellow Soldier and only worked with SSG Mathis a few times, which is to say I barely knew him, but remember him as if it were a-lot more. It was a great time had when SSG Mathis was around, and he kept you smiling and looking forward to the next visit. I am proud to have met him and will keep his family in my prayers.

Jim

I remember Mark, Reed, Tony and Tim all playing in my sister Julie and her husband Marv's back yard kicking a ball around and in all a special day for all of the four cousins playing ball together. The two grandmas who got along famously (Grandma Sanders and Grandma Boate)sitting and chatting together while watching fondly of their grand childs playing. And then Mark went off to war and protected his country for our freedom. I know where Mark got his character and integrity from as I know his father...it is from Jim, and therefore Jim, while crushed at this loss (as so many are that knew Mark) has to be one very, very proud father of the legasy of his son. He is a hero and I will never forget the experience of standing in front of Mark's uniform with honorable badges and thinking of him wearing that for our freedom. Thank you Mark, Reed, Jamie, Judy and all of your family and loved ones...Mark is a hero and I will never forget the love of his life and family and the ultimate sacrifice he made for all of us.
