Chester A. Smith "Smitty" was born on February 20, 1920, to Alice M. Nagle Smith and Lute A. Smith in Houston, Missouri. He passed away on September 29, 2013 in the loving care of Country Care Adult Family Home, in Snohomish, WA. As a young child, his family moved to Arizona. Chester graduated from Glendale Union High School (1938) where he excelled scholastically and athletically. He went on to study at Phoenix College and Arizona State University. Chester entered the Army on November 13, 1942. He was commissioned in the Infantry and served as a Lieutenant with the Parachute Troops during WWII. Returning from the war with an honorable discharge, Chester spent many years in the retail clothing business in both Arizona and Washington. On January 18, 1945 he married Deeda I. O'Dell and resided in Phoenix until they moved to Everett in 1964. Chester and Deeda celebrated 68 years of marriage in January. Their love of ballroom dancing was enjoyed by many who would clear the floor to watch them dance at the Everett Yacht Club and Elks Club until their health no longer permitted. His unconditional love of animals was always present in their home with the cats and dogs he had for pets through the years. Chester's enthusiasm for storytelling, his infectious sense of humor and love for his family and friends will be greatly missed. His passion for writing resulted in a published novel, several short stories, as well as numerous letters to the editor of the Everett Herald. Chester is survived by his wife, Deeda; daughter, Vanna Smith of Renton, WA; son, Richard Smith (Nancy) of Everett; granddaughter, Lyndsey Smith (Graham Reichmann) of Everett; sister, Dorothy Koehler (John) of Chandler, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; stepson, Chet Williams; brothers, Bill and Farrell Smith; and sisters, Margie Nelson and Lena Newby. A celebration honoring him will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, 1615 SE Everett Mall Way, Everett, WA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Everett Animal Shelter, 333 Smith Island Road, Everett WA 98201, in memory of Chester A. Smith.
