William R. Howard Obituary
William "Bill" Raymond Howard, 80, of Swansea passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on Saturday, September 8, 2018. He was the devoted husband of his recently deceased wife Sandra A Howard after 54 years of marriage. Born in Fall River, he was the son of Gertrude F. (Schneider) Howard and Raymond W. Howard, and older brother of Raymond Howard Jr. He lived in the city until 1991 when he moved with his adoring wife Sandy to Swansea. He joined the Navy in 1957 and served until 1959, during which time he had adventurous voyages to South America. Upon leaving the Navy, he became an ironworker and certified welder working throughout New England, most notably during the construction of the Callahan Tunnel in Boston and the Newport Pell Bridge. Given his diverse and fine skills, he was briefly employed by City of Fall River teaching program for basic plumbing and carpentry; many of his students progressed to own their own successful businesses. In 1973, he and his beloved wife started the S. Howard Bus Company which is still thriving today. During that time, he and his wife opened a donut shop in the Flint and Howard Auto sales. His most cherished hobby was adoring his wife Sandy. His glittering wife was made more luminous by shining the spotlight of his unconditional love and his sparking blue eyes in her direction, while never being overshadowed himself. Indeed they were always together, and genuinely shared each other passions, especially his love of boating. He was fortunate enough to have taken his boat for one final bay cruise just days before his passing. He is survived by three sons, William R. Howard and his wife Lori of North Kingston RI, Chris J. Howard and his partner Dr. Dariusz Stachurski, and John P. Howard of Swansea; and two grandchildren Lesley and Ellen Howard, and nieces Melissa and Jessica Waylen, Caroline Howard, and nephews Raymond and Richard Howard. His absence as the stalwart anchor of the family will be greatly missed by all those whose life he impacted through his unassuming but kindhearted demeanor, gentle strength, and quiet generosity. We are comforted by the thought that he has rejoined his beloved wife, both sparkling as an eternal celestial pair. Calling Hours are Thursday September 13, 2018 from 4-7pm in the funeral home His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 11am in the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton Street, Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be private at the request of the family.
