ACWORTH, Ga. - Dora Jones passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013. She was born in February of 1943 to the late James Richard and Juanita Adams Tucker of Rock Hill, S.C.
Surviving are her husband, John Wells Jones of Acworth, Ga.; son, Brian Wells (Jamie) Jones of Katy, Texas; daughter, Kathryn Evelyn Tripp (Phillip) of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Avery Kate Jones, Brady Wells Jones, Evelyn Ashley Tripp and Emily Robyn Tripp; and brother, C. Edward Tucker (Martha) of Columbia, S.C.
Dora was first and foremost a teacher. It was no surprise when she graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., in 1964, with a degree in Music Education. She then went on to obtain her Master’s in Education from the University of South Carolina in 1975. Her journeys with her family took her to multiple states but two things always stayed true: she was going to support the South Carolina Gamecocks and she was going to teach. She missed no more than a handful of football games and she taught for 45 years at the following schools: Joseph Keels Elementary, North Springs Elementary, Albemarle Road Elementary, Long Creek Elementary, Holly Springs Elementary and retired in 2010 from Beulah Elementary in Georgia.
Her teaching wasn’t limited to her classroom; it was everywhere. She used every waking moment to teach John how to be the best father and man he could be. She taught two beautiful children to be high-achieving adults and they are currently raising families of their own. Every visit to grandchildren was sure to bring some handwriting books, books to help them learn how to read, coloring books for those that weren’t quite ready and an abundance of love. Her children and grandchildren are her legacy and she did everything in her power to make them the best and the brightest.
A graveside service for Dora Jones will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Carolina Children’s Home, P.O. Box 4465, Columbia, SC 29240 or Thornwell Home for Children, 302 S. Broad St., Clinton, SC 29325 as her life was devoted to children.
