John Elms Jr.GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mr. John William Elms Jr., 93, died Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Whitestone Masonic and Eastern Star Community of Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. A native of Fort Mill, Mr. Elms was a son of the late John William Elms Sr. and Annie Elizabeth Fitchet Elms. He was a Navy veteran who served in World War II. He was a Freemason, a member of the Catawba Lodge #56 for 70 years. He enjoyed fishing and working in his rose garden and collecting nutcrackers. He was a volunteer with the Salvation Army of Greensboro. He worked in the trucking industry where he worked as a general manager and eventually went into business for himself. He had customers throughout Central America and they all referred to him as Mr. Jake. Surviving are his daughter, Jeanie Hudson of Greensboro, N.C. and two grandsons, Herman D. (Jake) Hudson III and his wife, Sabrina and John William Hudson and one great-grandson, Owen Hudson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette Olive Elms; three brothers, Sidney Elms, Sloan Elms and Douglas Elms and two sisters, Betty Lee and Marie Messengill Meeks.
