Lance Shugart Obituary

ROCK HILL - Lance Shugart passed away peacefully on Nov. 11, 2012, at his home after gracefully and courageously battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was not defeated-he won his battle, as Lance is now healed and with his Heavenly Father.

A celebration of Lance’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Friendship United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be held immediately following service in the fellowship hall.

A native of Rock Hill, Lance graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1977. Soon after graduation, he married the love of his life, Kelly Anne Greene. In 1978, Lance began his career as an electrician and instrument technician with Bowater, where he was blessed with not only co-workers, but with the many wonderful friendships he so cherished.

Lance was a hard worker, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. He never missed an opportunity to deep chuckle or entertain those around him with his quick wit, great sense of humor and smile, which he maintained even on the hardest of days.

A devout Christian, Lance was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where he served on various boards and committees. He touched many lives through his involvement in the Chrysalis (youth) Ministry, Kairos (prison) Ministry, Salkahatchie Ministry and the Emmaus Community. He served his God faithfully and glorified Him throughout his life, including his departure. Lance will surely hear the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” ~ Matthew 25:20

Mr. Shugart is survived by his parents, Margaret Jackson Shugart and Charlie Shugart; wife and loving caregiver, Kelly; and daughters, Ashlyn Shugart and fiancé, Leo Chavez and Candace Shugart Martin and husband, Bryan. He will be greatly missed by all, including his grandson and “best buddy,” Austin Martin. Mr. Shugart is also survived by his siblings: brothers, Darryl (Mellen), Marty (Renee), and Scott, all of Rock Hill and sister, Karen Shugart of Alexandria, Va. In addition, he was blessed with numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and close friends, which he loved deeply and cherished spending time with.

A special thanks to the nurses with Agape Hospice, particularly Mandy Williams and to Chassidy Mullinax, who assisted with providing loving care for Mr. Shugart, and to the MDA for their support over these past four years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Mr. Shugart through donations to either Friendship United Methodist Church, 1200 Neely Store Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) at 3300 E. Sunrise Dr., Tucson, AZ 85718, noted for ALS Research.

Lance’s hope and prayer would be that we not be saddened by his death but that we rejoice in having a God that will reunite us once again in Heaven!

Kelly, Candace, Ashlyn, and family,
Truly and deeply sorry for the grief you are feeling right now. It's well known that Lance was a strong man who fought a hard battle. With you by his side, I'm sure nothing but love and support helped him to remain strong throughout his illness. It's amazing how loving someone not only changes you but makes you want to give all you can give. We all were lucky to know this amazing man...to know that he was cared for with love, that his grin will forever be a memory..May the memories you all shared comfort you, especially in the days ahead. The void will be heavy..But God will see you through. Lifting you up in my prayers. Love to you all.

Kelly and the Girls, Lance was one of the strongest Christians I've ever known, and I know he loved you all, God has a plan and a purpose that he reviles to us only one piece at a time. We may not know the reason now but one day we will know when we are all together . May The Lord of heaven bless and smile on your family.

Kelly, Lance and family. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to know Lance and to tell him that i loved him My heart broke when I found out that he had ALS and what was ahead of him. Kelly, you are a blessed and strong woman and the two of you were blessed to be together. I always looked forward to seeing Lance at work, a bottle of water, a big smile, a joke and a robust laugh, he could brighten the drieriest of days. Never was their a person who didn't think the world of Lance, prases and love, never an unkind word. I envied the man he was, the courage and grace he showed. I will miss you, Lance, for the rest of my life. I hold you up as my HERO!
