Gleason, Katherine - Fort Mill, Sc
Katherine Gleason passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the full age of 90. She was born in Montclair, New Jersey to the late John and Kate Reilly on October 14, 1925. Until cancer separated her otherwise healthy body from her complex soul, she led an active life filled with a strong faith, church involvement, exercise, and a love of the arts. Throughout her years, she held many key administrative positions including at the United Nations in New York City and, even in the age of personal computers, she preferred writing letters on her typewriter. Katherine was married to William "Bill" Gleason for over 40 years until he passed away in 2004. They settled into the greater Charlotte area in the 1980s-first in Tega Cay on Lake Wylie-after having lived around the country following Bill's career in aerospace engineering. After Bill's passing, and most recently, Katherine lived in Sun City Carolina Lakes, where she embraced life by swimming, feeding hummingbirds on her back deck, tending to her plants, and most precious to her, reading. She was preceded in death by her siblings, John Reilly, Bob Reilly, and Irene Reilly Sokol. Katherine is survived by her daughter, Beverly Byrnes, of Charlotte; grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Byrnes; and numerous nieces and nephews. A mass and funeral service will be held to celebrate her life on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 12:30pm at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill, SC, officiated by Father John Giuliani. Her family will receive friends at the church following the service, starting at 1:30. Katherine's family would like to thank the staff of S&T Family Home Care in Charlotte and Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region for the care they provided to Katherine and the compassion they showed us throughout this journey. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either of these organizations or Katherine's parish, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Katherine fearlessly and joyfully anticipated being with the Lord. In her passing, Katherine would be comforted by your expressions of love and humor - precious gifts she herself bestowed on those around her. Online condolences may be shared at
