Leslie was born in Rock Hill, S.C. on May 13, 1968, daughter of the late Joe and Delane Baucom of Monroe, N.C. and the daughter-in-law of the late Raymond and Jerrie Schild of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She graduated from Rock Hill High School and received a degree in education from Winthrop University. Her teaching career began in Loris, S.C. at Daisy Elementary School. After moving to Garner, N.C., her career was spent at Washington GT Magnet Elementary School where she was known and loved by students, parents, teachers and staff. Leslie was passionate about life and lived it to its fullest. She enjoyed traveling, experiencing new things and especially loved a good adventure. Leslie had a contagious laugh and an infectious smile that would brighten your day. She embraced celebrations of all types and was always surrounded by friends who loved her for her genuine, authentic qualities. She was fierce and courageous while fighting this disease and battled as hard as anyone could battle. Her courage was an inspiration to so many. Leslie will be missed more than words can express by her family and friends who loved her so deeply. The Schild family would like to thank all of the nurses and caregivers at Duke and Chapel Hill Cancer Centers who treated Leslie with exceptional skill and empathy throughout her illness. They extend a heartfelt thank you to Transitions LifeCare and Home Instead. We are also thankful for amazing friends who stood by us during the many years of this battle. Words are inadequate to express our gratitude. A celebration of life will be held at Holland's United Methodist Church, 9433 Ten-Ten Road, Raleigh, NC on September 6, 2015, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service. Smith, Shirley M. - York
Shirley M. Smith YORK - Shirley M. Smith, 79, died Thursday, August 27, 2015, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice home in Rock Hill after battling Alzheimer's for 13 years. Born in Rhode Island, she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Smith and had one daughter, Denise Eakin. Shirley and her family moved to many cities before finally retiring in the Clover area. In this area she watched her grandchildren grow up and was a huge part of each of their lives. Shirley enjoyed traveling with her husband. The two traveled to many places overseas and used their RV to see the sights of America. Shirley's final trips were to Colorado and up North to see her family. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, family cookouts, cooking (the best spaghetti in the world), driving Cadillacs while flipping the bird, wearing high-heels, waking up at 11 a.m., purses, flea markets, burning the holiday bread, cheering for her grandchildren's sports teams, watching classic movies with her grandson, John, eating ice cream with her great-grand children, Madisun and Miller, hugging her grandson Bryan, making lunch for her grandson, Robert, working with granddaughter, Tiffany, doing Christmas Marathons and socializing with her daughter, Denise and giving her son-in-law, Vern a hard time (she was a great mother-in-law). Although her memories faded, her families did not! Shirley was loved by her family and seen as a spit-fire Matriarch that will be missed tremendously. She is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Smith; her daughter, Denise Eakin and husband, Vern Eakin; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, P. O. Box 993 Rock Hill, South Carolina 29731 or online at www.hospicecommunitycare.org .
