Rev. Charles BlackmonROCK HILL - The Rev. Charles Martin Blackmon, 92, of Rock Hill, S.C., formerly of Columbia, S.C., passed away at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014. Reverend Blackmon was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Lancaster, S.C., son of William Martin Blackmon and Ella Marion Bagley Blackmon. He graduated from Spartanburg Junior College in 1943, Wofford College in 1948, and Garrett Theological Seminary, Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1952. He served with distinction as an Administrative Staff Sergeant in WWII from 1944-1946, European theatre, on the staff of General George S. Patton during the liberation of the Jewish concentration camps. Reverend Blackmon founded Ridge Methodist Church in Munster, Ind., and served as minister of three other churches in the Indiana Conference before returning to the S.C. Conference in 1966. In South Carolina, he served Grace in N. Augusta and Buncombe Street in Greenville, S.C. He served as Pastor Emeritus of Bethel UMC, in Columbia, S.C. He was a counselor with the S.C. Employment Security Commission, Greenville, S.C., from 1970-1975, manager of the SC ESC, Rock Hill, S.C., from 1976-1983, and local area director of the SC ESC, Columbia, S.C., from 1983-1986. Over the years, Reverend Blackmon was active in many religious, community, political and educational causes in Indiana and South Carolina. Most recently: Columbia Rotary (33 years), and the Benton Young Friday the 13th Club in Columbia. Surviving is his wife of 69 years, Gladys Belk Blackmon of the home; daughters, Debbie Blackmon of Rock Hill, S.C., and Diane Blackmon of York, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Cathy Blackmon of LaPlata, Md.; along with several nieces and nephews. Reverend Blackmon was a very loving, caring husband and father. He was an exceptional inspiration to all who met him. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Woodland UMC in Rock Hill, S.C., and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Bethel UMC in Columbia, S.C., with visitation following both services. Burial will be at a later date at Bethel Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Community Care, P.O.
