Jeanette CollinsROCK HILL - Mrs. Jeanette Collins was lifted up to heaven in the arms of God on May 12, 2014. A memorial service for Mrs. Collins will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Avenue, with the Rev. Robert Moss officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Collins Jr., Dr. Keith Collins and Kent Collins; and her daughter, Karen Collins; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving mother to her children and made sure that they received a college education. She did this by cleaning houses, laying brick and working as a shipping manager at a furniture company. She would later become the business manger for her daughter. One of her children was born with autism and developmental challenges and when he was less than two years old, she was advised to put him in an institution and walk away. She wouldn't do it and instead kept him home and taught him to walk, talk, read and write--all the things she was told he would never do. She devoted herself to making sure that he had a full and rich life of his own. She was a life-long advocate for people with special challenges, often helping young parents that found themselves where she once had been with her own child. Although she is gone, we will forever cherish our memories of her care. No one could have asked for a better mother. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Chrysalis Autism Center, 410 Oakland Ave., Ste. 101, Rock Hill, SC 29730. Greene Funeral Home N/W Chapel is handling arrangements for the Collins family. Condolences may be made at www.greenefuneralhome.net.
