Roger-Lynn Sumner GREAT FALLS - Ms. Roger-Lynn Sumner, 71, went home to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 31, 2014, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital, Winnsboro. A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Greenlawn Memorial Park (Serenity Gardens), 6601 Winwan Drive, Columbia, SC 29209, with Reverend Todd Horton officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, Great Falls. Ms. Sumner was born in Chester County on November 5, 1942, and was the daughter of the late Gudger W. Sumner and Cecile Brannon Sumner. She was a graduate of Great Falls High School, Winthrop College and The University of South Carolina and a member of Great Falls Presbyterian Church. Ms. Sumner was an accomplished pianist with a beautiful singing voice. Her passion and her gift was teaching school. This gave her the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many. Preceding her retirement, Ms. Sumner chose to teach in inner city schools such as Atlanta, Ga., Charlotte, N.C., and Savannah, Ga., where she influenced the life of students and offered them the chance to make a difference in this world. She is survived by one son, Robert J. McCowan Jr., of Winnsboro; one daughter, Amanda Lynn McCowan-Peavy (Scott), of Blythewood; three grandchildren, Victoria Laine McCowan, of Greenville, and Gauge Peavy and Colton Newman, both of Blythewood; and one brother, Doug Sumner of Great Falls. In lieu of flowers and in honor of their mother, the family asks that memorials be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
