Robert Landon Obituary

Landon, Robert
Dec. 28, 1928 - Oct. 24, 2013
Bob passed away peacefully in Sarasota, Florida on October 24, 2013 at age 84 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Carole; sister Barbara Stanley; children Geoffrey and Suzanne; daughter-in-law Christine; and grandchildren Rachel and Gregory.
Born in Portsmouth, Ohio on December 28, 1928 to Herman Robert Landon and Hazel Ruth Tener, Bob was the youngest of three children. Raised in Chicago, Bob attended South Shore High School and later Cornell University. After two years at Cornell, Bob enlisted in the Navy where he served as a pilot for four years and achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG. Upon his return to civilian life, Bob returned to school and graduated with a degree in Business from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1955. While at Penn, Bob met and married his first wife Sarah Ann Newpher. After graduation, Bob joined National City Bank in Cleveland, Ohio, during which time he and Sally welcomed their first child Geoffrey. In 1960 Bob moved to a job with Smith Kline in Philadelphia and they returned to Sally's hometown of Wayne Pennsylvania. While in Wayne, their second child Suzanne was born. Bob joined Grumman Allied Industries as controller of the canoe division in Marathon, New York in 1965 and the family relocated to Ithaca, New York where Bob had attended Cornell 18 years earlier. In 1968 Bob transferred to the Grumman Allied headquarters in Garden City, New York and the family relocated to Northport, where Bob served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed sailing at the Northport Yacht Club. Bob attended the Harvard University Advanced Management Program and in 1979 was appointed President of the Flxible Bus Division of Grumman Allied Industries, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. Upon his retirement, Bob and Sally relocated to the Sarasota area and built a home in the Oaks, where they were active in the Club and enjoyed their many neighbors and golfing friends until Sally's death in 1995. Bob remained at the Oaks, and in 2000 at his 55th high school reunion he renewed his friendship with recently widowed Carole Erikson who was his neighbor and schoolmate growing up in Chicago. They married in 2001 and Bob was welcomed into Carole's family by her sons Rick, Rob, and Randy and their grandchildren. Bob and Carole enjoyed a wonderful 12 years together, enjoying life at the Oaks and later at Bay Village.
A memorial service will be held at Bay Village in the auditorium on Tuesday, November 26th at 3:30 PM. Bob was passionate about supporting Hospice, and donations in his name to Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota or the Hospice of Contra Costa County are appreciated.
