Haney, Ellen Gay Frederick
Aug. 2, 1925 - Jul. 12, 2013
Ellen Gay Frederick Haney passed away peacefully on July 12, 2013 at the age of 87 in West Palm Beach, Florida. She was born in 1925 in Freeport, Illinois to Bertha Backer and Carl Leroy Frederick, Sr. Gay was a graduate of Cornell University and member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She married Walter E. Voisinet, Jr. while both were at Cornell University. After Walt received his doctorate in physical chemistry from Yale University in 1951, they moved to Buffalo, New York where her husband began his career in research with National Gypsum. Walt and friend John Whitney started Gaymar Industries, naming the company after their wives. Gay and Walt divorced in 1959 after having four children.
In 1960, Gay married Col. Albert R. Haney, U.S. Army. The family then lived in Bethesda, Maryland and did tours-of-duty with Al in Heidelberg and Stuttgart, Germany. While in Germany the family traveled throughout Europe before returning to the United States. Gay and Al moved in 1972 to Bird Key in Sarasota, Florida where they enjoyed a happy and socially active retirement with many dear friends. Gay and Al were members of the Bird Key Yacht Club and supported many philanthropic organizations in Sarasota. Gay occasionally modeled for Lilly Pulitzer and John Baldwin on St. Armands Circle. Al passed away in 1998 and Gay moved to West Palm Beach to live with her daughter Paula in 2008.
Gay was ever so gracious, elegant, cheerful, caring and kind. Her personality made her a joy to be with and she had such a positive approach to life. Gay found delight in her family and enjoyed cooking, entertaining with friends, fashion, art, and the natural beauty of the world.
She was preceded in death by her sister Genevieve Petrey and three brothers, David, Richard, and Lowell Frederick. Gay's beloved son Walter E. Voisinet, III passed away in 2009.
She is survived by her sister Delores Joan Frederick of Tucson, AZ, and brother Carl Leroy Frederick, Jr. of Bradenton, FL. Survivors also include stepchildren, Thomas Haney and Cornelia Parkes.
Our dear angel will always be in the hearts of her three loving daughters and their families: Paula and Rett Thompson, sons Tyler and Kyle, of West Palm Beach, FL; Deborah Erb, sons Zachary, Timothy and Benjamin, of Buffalo and Rochester, NY; and Susan Voisinet and William Flexsenhar of Fairfax, VA.
Gay was buried in December with Al in Arlington National Cemetery.
