Ebbs, Jane C. May 11, 1912 - Dec. 24, 2014 Jane C. Ebbs, 102, died on December 24, 2014 in Sarasota. She was born in Newport, Rhode Island and was educated at the University of Rhode Island and the University of Chicago, where she earned a PhD. in human nutrition. She began her distinguished government career in 1942 when she joined the US Civil Service as Nutrition Advisor to The Office of the Quartermaster General. She later held a similar position in the Department of Defense. For 33 years Jane held numerous key positions in the Defense Department including Dietary Consultant to General Lucius Clay, the Military Governor of occupied Germany; Special Feeding and Nutrition Advisor, Office of the Quartermaster General; Leader of the Food Utilization Mission to Germany for the Under Secretary of the Army; and Liaison Officer for the Quartermaster General to the Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defense. Jane's role in the Allied Efforts to feed liberated Europe and later Asia led to saving millions of lives in those war torn countries. Amongst her many publications and reports, her book 'The Hidden War' stands out as the primary work on how the Civil Affairs Units of the US Army fed the liberated population of Europe after WW II. In 1965 she joined the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and continued her work to assist countries around the world to feed themselves. Her honor include Fellow in Nutrition, University of Chicago, Fellow of the American Public Health Association, Senior Member and Fellow of the Royal Society of Health, Associate Fellow of the American Astronomical Society and Member of the American Institute of Nutrition. During her career she was also awarded the War Department Decoration of Exceptional Civilian Service, the Sustained Superior Performance Award, the Commendation for Meritorious Civilian Service, and the Department of Defense Certificate of Commendation. She was inducted into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2003 she was one of a very select few to receive the 'Ancient Order of St Martin', the highest award given by the Quartermaster General. After her retirement in 1975 she made her home in Sarasota in the early 1980s and was a strong supporter of many philanthropic endeavors throughout the years. Ertugrul, Haluk Jun. 12, 1928 - Jan. 20, 2015 Haluk Ertugrul died Jan. 20, 2015. He was a kind, gentle person and an example to his family who, together with his many friends, will miss him dearly. A graduate of Robert College in Turkey, he studied business at NYU. He worked at Voice of America before joining Irving Trust. His banking career took him to New York, Beirut, Paris and London. Evantash, Lillian S. Aug. 3, 1915 - Jan. 21, 2015 Lillian S. Evantash, died peacefully at home in Siesta Key, FL at the age of 99. Born in Philadelphia, PA on Aug. 3, 1915, Lillian spent most of her life there, moving to Siesta Key in the mid 1980's. She is survived by her sons, Neil and Alan (Peggy), grandchildren, Stephanie Sklodowski (Chris) and Gregory Evantash (Brandy), great-grandchildren, Jacob Sklodowski, Benjamin Sklodowski, Lyndzy Evantash and Elijah Evantash. Lillian served thirty years as a teacher/ consultant in the disciplines of reading and math in the School District of Philadelphia, having earned her BS and Master's Degrees in Education at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. She was a member of Educators' Chapter Bnai Brith, Philadelphia, and SaBra Chapter Hadassah in Sarasota, where she held positions of secretary, treasurer and columnist for the monthly publication, Kol Bat Ami. SaBra had honored her with the Hadassah Love-of-Lifetime award. She also served as a tutor for the Sarasota School District, and volunteer at the Sarasota Manatee Jewish Federation. Her pleasures included piano, crafts, gardening, art, poetry and Spanish literature. Contributions can be made to SaBra Chapter Hadassha or the charity of your choice.

Grossman, Philip  
Grossman, Philip May 1, 1924 - Jan. 13, 2015 Philip Grossman, 90, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Sarasota, FL, died on Jan. 13, 2015. A native of Utica, NY, Philip served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from American University and retired after 35 years of US Government service, chiefly with the Central Intelligence Agency. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley; his children, Richard Reichler (Michelle McDonough) of Jacksonville, FL, Diana Simpson (Scott) of Auburn, AL, and Nancy Grossman (Everett Porter) of Soest, The Netherlands; his sister, Gertrude Myers, of San Antonio, TX; and four grandchildren. Hammond, Gladys May 27, 1912 - Jan. 17, 2015 Gladys Hammond, of Venice, Florida, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2015. She was 102 years old. The daughter of the late George and Agnes Brune, she was the widow of William Hammond. Gladys was the loving mother of 3 children, grandmother of 12 with an untold number of great grand children. A remembrance and celebration of her life will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church in Englewood, 405 South McCall Rd, Florida on Saturday February 7, 2015 at 3:00 pm. The family wishes that no flowers be sent, but rather donations in her memory be sent to St Jude's Children's Hospital.
