Bonnie D. Christofel, 81, of Sarasota, died on Dec. 23, 2013. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sat., at Church of the Palms Chapel.
She is survived by her son, Chris Oatis, his wife Kristin, and their daughter Madeline.
Born in Alliance, OH, Bonnie attended college at Bowling Green, then transferred to the Univ. of Pittsburgh, where she graduated with a B.S. in Education (1958). Bonnie later went on to earn a M. of Education (1963) and a M. of Library Sciences (1972). She worked as an elementary teacher for over 30 years.
Bonnie was an avid seashell collector, and ran a world-wide specimen seashell business, The Shell Connection. Seashell collecting in part brought her to Sarasota in 1987. She also served as the President of the Sarasota Shell Club, as well as the V.P. of the Conchologists of America.
After retiring, Bonnie volunteered for many organizations, including the Senior Friendship Center and the Van Wezel. She also supported numerous causes, such as Children International and the ASPCA. Bonnie liked golf, as well as crossword and sudoku puzzles. She also enjoyed playing bridge with the same group for many years. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Diagnosed with advanced-stage colon cancer in 2012, she lived her final days to their fullest.
