Donald Warren Hoffman, 73, of Sarasota, FL, died on Mar. 13, 2013. Funeral arrangements by: Toale Brothers Funeral Homes.
Don was born in Sayre, PA to Geraldine and Warren Hoffman. Don graduated from Athens High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Navy 1957-1961. He was stationed in Turkey, Spain, and Washington D.C. and San Francisco. He attended the University of Maryland and majored in electronic engineering. He graduated from the CT Electronics School. He also attended the Cleveland Radio Institute of Electronics. Don was married to Dr. Jan Hoffman June 21, 1986, where they lived in Fairfax, Virginia before moving to Sarasota, Florida in 2000.
Survived by his wife, Jan, and three children along with their spouses: Jeff Hoffman and Mike Stanley of San Francisco, California, Natalie and Michael Cohen of Fairfax, Virginia, Tracey and Paul Skafidas of Bristow, Virginia, and stepdaughter Stephanie Hoppe Burgess of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He had five grandchildren: Drew, Cole, Nicole, Kyle and Cayden. Also survived by the mother of his children, Marjorie Hoffman; sister Mary Sargent and sister and brother-in-law Joan and Tom Page, of Sayre, Pa and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bobby and Carla Lindley of St Louis, Missouri. Don was preceded in death by his parents.
Don retired from IBM with 32 years of service which included numerous sales management positions. His last position before he retired was that of a Client Exec to the U.S. Navy. After IBM Don worked for Radio Shack for 8 years by developing a new line of stores in Northern Virginia. In his later years he worked part time for Home Depot in Sarasota where he used his gardening skills to help clients with their landscaping needs. His favorite hobbies were landscaping and working on building projects.
Don was a hard working man who was kind to everyone he ever met. He was an inspiration to many individuals who battled cancer. He served as a volunteer patient counselor role to patients of M.D. Anderson Hospital. He will be greatly missed by all of the members of his family.
A viewing for Don will be on Sunday, March 17th at Toale Brothers Funeral Home in Sarasota Florida from 1 pm to 4 pm. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, March 18th at Toale Brothers Funeral Home - 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota. The interment will be held 11 am Tuesday, March 19th at Sarasota National Cemetery.
The family requests donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation at or at 383 Main Ave, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851. Please request notification of the donation be made to his spouse so a proper thank you can be acknowledged.
