E. Lucille (Gerkin) Kerr of Sarasota, FL - beloved grandmother and friend, passed away October 3 at the age of 96. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:00 pm at the Lake Point Woods Key West Auditorium (Beneva Rd. entrance).
Her son, Robert (Bob) Gerkin and husband, James (Bill) Kerr preceded her in death. Survivors include grandchildren, Stacy Gerkin Abbey of Tampa, Robert Gerkin Jr. of Sarasota, Jennifer Gerkin Daniels of Bartow, daughter-in-law, Marilyn Gerkin of Sarasota, great grandchildren, Andrew and Allyson Abbey of Tampa, Emily and Charlie Gerkin of Sarasota, and Mason and Grady Daniels of Bartow. She is survived by numerous family and friends in Wichita, KS and Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beneva Christian Church Memorial Fund (4835 S Beneva Rd, Sarasota, FL 34233).
Eva Lucille Kerr was born in Piedmont, Kansas to Joseph and Flossie Hon. One of eight children, Lucille grew up working on her father's honey farm during the Great Depression. After high school, Lucille married, had son, Robert, and went on to the Wichita Business College, where she graduated in 1940. She then worked for the Community Chest, now known as the United Way. During this time, she spent three years as a single parent, until she met and married her husband of 37 years, Bill Kerr.
She later worked as the assistant to the local bank president for seven years, Lucille was then hired away by the bank's chairman, Walter Kuhn, an oil and gas entrepreneur. Lucille worked as office manager for the Kuhn Drilling Company for 27 years and ran the business from 1967 to 1977.
In 1977, she moved to Sarasota to be near her grandchildren. She loved the beautiful view of Sarasota Bay and enjoyed boating, fishing and swimming.
