Frederick William Ruohonen, 86, of Venice, Florida passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at his home. He was born on April 3, 1928. His parents emigrated from Sweden and Finland in their early teens and settled in the Detroit area. Fred attended Cass Tech High School in Detroit, MI. He was in the army and served two tours of duty in the Korean War. When he returned, he married and was a branch manager for the Lee & Cady Warehouse Grocer. Fred was also manager of novelty sales at the Fred Silber Company in Detroit, Mi. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Regina Mary (Jean) Ruohonen, his daughter, Karen (Richard Rieck) and his son, Guy Ruohonen. He has 4 grand children (Kelsey, David, and Kevin Rieck, and Bryce Ruohonen). He is also survived by his brother, Frank Ruohonen (Fay), nephew, Jon Ruohonen, and nieces, Kristin Hedges (Jim) and Nancy Feeney. Fred was a life member of the VFW, DAV, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Redford, MI and DAV in Nokomis and Moose in Venice, FL. Fred was a supporter of the Boys and Girls club. He was also past president of Exchange Club of Redford, Mi. Fred was an avid bowler in his early days and quite the card shark throughout his life. Fred was known for his giving ways, quick wit and dry humor. He was loved by everyone he met. A visitation will be held Sunday, May 11, 2014 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Ewing Funeral Home. Burial will be later at the Sarasota National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the VFW Post 8118, 825 East Venice Avenue, Venice, Fl. 34292.
