George A. Raymond of Venice, FL and Barnstable, MA died April 9, 2013.
George proudly served in the Navy from 1941 - 1946 enlisting just 3 days before the Pearl Harbor attack. He served on the USS Milwaukee and the USS Helena with a ranking of Musician 2nd Class.
He received his BS in Education from Florida Southern College, and he was one of the original ODK Honor Society members at FSC. He received his Masters in Administration from Boston University and Doctorate in Music from Calvin Coolidge College. He also attended the Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C.
His career was dedicated to the field of education as a teacher of special needs students, principal of numerous schools, and Director of Music in Braintree, MA for 17 yrs.
George will always be remembered by his family and friends for his sense of humor, kind heart, interest in gardening and, most of all, his passion for music, which started with his trumpet at age 4 and continued into adulthood as a member of the Venice and Northport bands in FL and Barnstable and Chatham bands in MA. He also shared his expertise with many private trumpet students over the years. In his retirement, he played taps regularly at Veteran graveside services.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; daughter Helen of Venice, FL; son David and his wife Sally of Eldersburg, MD; grandson Scott Williamson and his wife Casey of Lakewood Ranch, FL; three great grandchildren; and he was predeceased by his son Bob.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held at the family home on Sunday, April 21, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 pm, 864 Morgan Towne Pl, Venice, FL 34292. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL. 34238.
