George Stephen Bittner passed away at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida on Monday, August 25, 2014 following a five year battle with cancer. His legacy lives on through his family: his wife of 44 years Stephanie (Jakubecz); his four children Eric, Craig, Chris and David; 10 grandchildren Tucker, Karis, Kandra, Ava, Olivia, Kaitlin, Alexis, Chelsea, Kody, and Nolan; and his sister and brother Susan (Keller) and Ron Bittner. Born on August 30, 1946 in Cleveland Ohio George worked in the steel mills in Cleveland to earn his way through College, attending Bowling Green State University. After beginning his career at General Electric, George was drafted into the finance core of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in West Germany. After his service, Bittner returned to GE, later moving to Kansas City where he started his dream job at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation where he significantly influenced the charitable landscape of the community. George had a great love for Kansas City and spent a great deal of his life and career serving the community. He moved to Florida in 2012 after his retirement from the Community Foundation and joined the Lakewood Ranch Baptist Church. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, August 30 at Lakewood Ranch Baptist Church at 11:00am. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:30AM at Sarasota National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the George S. and Stephanie J. Bittner Charitable fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.
