Ione Gunkel Carman, a long-time resident of Wisconsin who retired to Longboat Key, Fla., in 1986, died of complications from heart disease on Nov. 11 in Bradenton. She was 92.
Ms. Carman was born April 29, 1921 in Madison. She attended the University of Wisconsin Madison, dropping out of college to join the workforce as office manager for the Pahl Tire Co. when the United States entered World War II.
She was married to Charles W. Carman Jr. in 1944 and the couple had five children. After Mr. Carman died in 1971, Ms. Carman became a sales associate for the Scandinavian Design and Hans Hansen furniture stores in the Milwaukee area.
She is survived by her sisters, Margaret Seehafer and Elizabeth McCoy of Longboat Key; her brother, Theodore Gunkel of Madison; her sons, Charles W. Carman III of Pleasanton, Calif.; Fredric P. Carman, Dallas, Tex.; and Robert J. Carman, New Berlin, Wis.; a daughter, Diane Carman of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Carman.
