James Francis Pheney passed away at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida on April 21, 2013. He was 79. Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan & relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, and a 1955 graduate of the University of Missouri. For the next 22 years, he was in the United States Air Force . He flew the B-52's for the Strategic Air Command and the C-130's during the Viet Nam war. He was highly decorated during his career, also earning the Distinguished Flying Cross medal. After retiring, he went into land development in Colorado, and moved to Florida in 1986. He is survived by his wife Beth Pheney of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and his five children, Patricia Ryan, Alexandria, Va., James Pheney, Jr., and Brian Pheney, and Cheryl Haller from Colorado, Julie Pheney; and Stacy Brunsell and Nicole Ruiz from Janesville, Wisconsin, and twelve grandchildren; brother, Mike Pheney & two nephews Mike & Shaun Pheney from Missouri. He will be laid to rest with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, on Wednesday, July 11th, at 9:00 am. Following his internment will be a family reception held at the Officer's Club. "This bird's gotta fly."
