James M. Beatty, II was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 9, 1937. He moved to Sarasota in 1977. He was the Supervisor of Vehicle Operations at the Transportation Research Center of Ohio. He graduated from the Columbus Academy and attended Lehigh University. In Columbus he had belonged to the Sports Car Club of America, Buckeye Sports Car Club, Rotary Club of Columbus, Sales Executive Club, Society of Automotive Engineers, Columbus Country Club and the Catawba Island Club.
In Sarasota he was a Senior Member of the Sarasota Power Squadron, a Past President of RealRail and the Sarasota Model Railroad Club as well as being a Past Commodore of the Sarasota Yacht Club. A Life Member of the National Model Railroad Association, he also attained the level of Master Model Railroader. He proudly served in the US Navy at the Naval Air Test Center and aboard the USS Valley Forge (CVS-45).
Hobbies included building scale model trains, photography, traveling, exploring ghost towns, 4-wheeling, finding and documenting covered bridges, sailing, finding any excuse to ride a train.......
Survivors include his best friend and loving wife, Sandy; sons James (Amy) of Strongsville, OH; Mark (Leni) of Cincinnati, OH; Michael (Lori) of Powell, OH and Vincent of Little Creek, VA as well as step-daughters Dana DiGiovanni (Robert) of Arlington, VA; Marni Swain of St. Petersburg, FL; Julie Ross of Cincinnati, OH and Jill Anders (Thomas) of Sarasota. He also had 7 grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by his mother Helen, father Robert, sister Suzanne and brother Robert, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to either the or the Colorado Railroad Museum, in his memory.
