James Weller Sweeney was born June 14, 1933 and is the son of the late Clarence and Mary Sweeney. Jim passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends in his Sarasota home on April 2nd. He is predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth.
Jim graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1955 with a BS and received an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management - Northwestern University
Jim had a very successful business career including positions at RR Donnelley, Johnson & Johnson, IBM and American Hospital Supply, Corp. before starting an executive search firm that specialized in senior level placement.
Jim was an active member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church and served on their vestry when he resided in Tampa, Florida.
Jim was an avid tennis player, enjoyed fishing and traveled the world. He was a loving husband, a good father, and a friend to so many and he was always the life of the party! Jim also operated under many aliases during his life including: Chief, The Big Hitter, Coach, Captain Excess, Mr. Wizard and other assorted terms of endearment. However, regardless of the name, he was always known as a sharp, fun loving and generous man.
Jim is survived by his wife Joan, his brother John, his two sons Jim and Tom, along with 5 grandchildren (Billy, Margaret, Kiona, Kalea & Makani).
There will be a gathering at Toale Brothers Funeral Home in downtown Sarasota this Friday from 4:00-6:00 followed by a private reception at the family's home.
