Joan Van Wie Holmes Clayton passed away at her home in Venice, Florida on December 3, 2013. She was born October 4, 1934 to A. Stuart and Julia Beatrice Holmes in Sayville, New York. She graduated in 1956 from the State University of New York at Potsdam with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education concentrating in piano and violin. Known as "Van" in college, she was always proud of her Dutch heritage whose ancestry settled on the Hudson Valley in 1648.
Upon graduation, Joan taught music and private piano lessons in the Oneida and Sherrill area New York Public School systems. She also completed graduate studies at Syracuse University and Utica College.
Joan was an outstanding athlete in primary school, college throughout her adult life. In her senior year of high school, as the captain and principle pitcher of her woman's softball team, she lead her team to a victory over the men's varsity baseball team at Sayville High School. Upon her move to Venice, Florida with her former husband Norman, she was often the Women's Golf Club champion in her age group at Capri Isles and the Venice Golf and Country Clubs. From 1986 to 1990 she served on the USGA Women's Amateur Golf Committee. She was a member of the Rules Committee for the first USGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship held at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to golf, Joan had a passion for bridge and other card playing.
She was predeceased by her brother Arthur S. Holmes, survived by his widow Christy Horak Holmes and her brother, Charles S. Holmes and his wife Diane. Her five nieces Deborah H. Dalton of Cleveland, OH; Tracey H. Mullikin and Julie C. Holmes both of Asheville, NC; Melisa H. South of Center Harbor, NH and Carrie C. Holmes of Sag Harbor, NY and their collective seven great nieces and nephews were the center of her life.
A memorial luncheon will be held in Joan's honor at the Venice Golf and Country Club for friends and family in mid-January, 2014. In lieu of flowers the family has honored Joan's request that donations to the St. Francis Animal Rescue, 1925 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 34293 www.stfrancisarfl.org
