Leroy Birney

Birney, Leroy
Jan. 13, 1942 - Nov. 25, 2013
Leroy Birney, 71, passed away on November 25, 2013 at home in Bradenton. Born Elmer Leroy Birney on January 13, 1942, in Dodge City, Kansas, Leroy spent 15 years as a missionary in Colombia, South America, where he taught the Bible, trained pastors and evangelists and began numerous churches. "Lee Roy", as he was known, then founded Missionary Action, Inc., and Fountain of Life, Inc., as non-profit missionary organizations to mobilize Latin Americans as witnesses for Christ. In West Africa, where Leroy served as a missionary for 8 years, his outreach continues today through those he discipled and inspired.
A 1960 graduate of Bucklin High School in Kansas, Leroy was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Kansas, where he was a 1964 graduate. In 1968, he earned a Master's of Divinity at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, and in 1986 he became a Doctor of Biblical Theology at Trinity Seminary in Plymouth, Florida. Called by God to be a minister at the age of 12, Leroy did not find peace until the age of 16, when he learned salvation depended on Christ's goodness, not his own, and he accepted Christ as his Savior. With this newfound peace, he prepared for and entered the mission field.
Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Margaret. He is survived by his loving and loyal wife, Joyce; children, Steven, Susana Wicker, Sara Tullio, David Amos, Amanda DeCew, Carissa Amos, Jonathan Amos; 15 grandchildren; former wife, Norma Craiger; and brothers in Kansas, Dale, Carl, Raymond, and their families. Memorial Service will be held 4:30 PM on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Fellowship of Believers, 3333 12th Street, Sarasota 34237. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, 604 43rd Street West, Bradenton, FL 34209 in charge of arrangements. Leroy asked in lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Fountain of Life, 3417 49th Street West, Bradenton, FL 34209. Joyce, Leroy's partner in missions, will continue his vision and work.
