Michael J. Close, an attorney and CEO of Balmer Parc LLC, a real estate management company, passed away late Thursday evening in Key Biscayne, FL, after suffering a heart attack. He was 70. Formerly of Greenwich, CT, Mr. Close and his wife, Nancy, traveled between their home in Sarasota, FL and New York City.
Mr. Close was born January 24, 1943, in Sandusky, OH to Robert J. Close, also an attorney, and Mary Lee Graefe Close. He received a BA from Lafayette College, where he was president of his fraternity, Theta Chi, and a J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review. He practiced law with Dewey Ballantine from 1968 until 1996, as a senior tax partner. Mr. Close later served as President and CEO of Balmer Parc LLC, as well as a trustee of the Esther M. Mertz Trust. He also held positions on the boards of the First Citizens Banc Corp of Sandusky, OH and the Asolo Repertory Theater of Sarasota, FL. He maintained memberships to Burning Tree Country Club (Greenwich, CT), India House (New York, NY) and The Meadows Country Club (Sarasota, FL).
In addition to his beloved wife, Nancy, he is survived by his daughter, Christie and her husband, Charles Batchelor, his daughter Karen and her fiancé, Christopher Clarke, and a grandson, Benjamin, as well as his brother, David, and sisters, Stephanie and Candace.
A visitation was held Monday, February 11th in Sarasota, FL, and will be followed by a memorial service at St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue in New York City. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his memory to either of two charities very dear to Michael: the Bluefish Boosters, Inc. (bluefishswimclub.com) or The Heritage Foundation (heritage.org).
