Nancy Lee (Duff) Rogers, 92, passed away peacefully at her home in North Port, FL. A memorial service in her honor will be held at 12:00 pm on Thurs., Oct. 10, 2013 at LaCasa Mobile Home Park Club House in North Port, FL.
She is survived by her loving husband Claude Marvin Rogers, children Mary, James, Kenn, and Carolyn Rogers Field, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and namesake niece Nancy Murray and family. Nancy and Marvin hosted foreign exchange students in the 1960's, Birgit and Ivan. Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, the heart of her family. Nancy received her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University
. She and Marvin met at the University of Oklahoma where they were both graduate students. They married in Detroit, MI, in August, 1944 and lived in the Detroit area until retirement. In her career, Nancy taught elementary school and then returned to college and went on to earn a PhD from the University of Michigan
in 1979. She worked as a liaison between student teachers and Wayne State University until 1984 when she and Marvin, who was a Professor of Botany at Wayne State, both retired. Nancy was very active in the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an international women's organization with a primary focus on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. She promoted Campfire girls as a counselor and leader. Nancy was passionate about education and teaching, and was a skilled storyteller, elevating family folklore to an art form with her grandchildren. Nancy and Marvin enjoyed many friendships at their winter retirement home in North Port, FL, and spent their summers at the family cottage Nancy loved on Lake Erie near Leamington, Ontario. Both avid travelers, they visited every time zone, and nearly 100 countries, and took a 6 week trip around the world when Nancy was 71. Nancy always taught her family the value of higher education, learning new cultures, embracing adventure, and cherishing friends and family.
