Robert Bernard "RB" Qualy, died peacefully at his home in Osprey, FL., fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, on Friday, March 22, 2013, after a life of inspired leadership. Born Nov. 10, 1924 in Richland Center, WI., to Julius Marion Qualy and Orilee Glendora (Hudson) Qualy. He was the third of four children and the only boy. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters (Beba Beth "Betsy" Qualy Madding, Inez Glendora "Inie" Qualy Bancroft, and Orilee Marion "O.M." Qualy Bouslough); his first wife and mother of their children, Betty (Murray) Qualy, and their son, William Qualy; and his second wife, Elinor "Muzzi" (Faust) Qualy (previously Wright). RB is survived by his gracious wife and angel, Helen "Irish" (Kelly) Qualy (formerly married to the late Leo Joerger); three children: John (Kathy) Qualy, Pamela Qualy and James Qualy, all of St. Louis, MO.; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Josh (Ali) Qualy and daughter, Arden, Montclair, N.J.; Jamie (Steve) Wynd and children, Caitlyn and Braden, Ellisville, MO.; Madison Qualy, St. Louis, MO.; the children of his late son, William (Terri Wintermann) Qualy, Dr. Lauren (Dr. Dan) Bialecki of St. Louis and Connor Qualy (engaged to Sarah DeLunas) of St. Louis; and the children of Pam Qualy, Cory Rothschild of Boston and Lindy Rothschild and Drew Rothschild, both of Denver. Additional survivors include the four children of his late second wife and her eight grandchildren: Dr. William (Jennifer) Wright of St. Louis and children, Will, Caroline and Andrew; Scott (Collette) Wright of Atlanta and children, Nicholas and Maggie; Christopher (Melissa) Wright of St. Louis and children, Corbin and Brooke; and Dr. Tom Wright of St. Louis and his son, Alex. He also leaves behind the family of Helen and the late Leo Joerger: Leo (Linda) Joerger and children, Nickolas, Kelli and Ryan, Chalfont, PA.; Kim (Jack) Twomey and children, Katie, John and Jimmie, Moorestown, N.J.; and Albert Joerger and children, Schuyler and Sophia, Sarasota, FL. R.B. studied engineering at University of Wisconsin
-Madison before joining the U.S. Army
Air Corps at age 18, leaving home July 4, 1943 and training as a pilot for the B24 and B29. He returned from service in time to resume classes at UW-Madison in 1946 and graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in business, majoring in insurance. He followed his father into a 41-year career with Northwestern Mutual, beginning as a Special Agent in Reedsburg, WI., on March 1, 1948. He was appointed District Agent in Fort Atkinson, WI. (1954) and General Agent in Davenport, Iowa (1957). In 1962, he was appointed General Agent in St. Louis, leading the office until his retirement in 1989. His genuine interest in others and passion to excel at all he did made him a leader in the Northwestern Mutual nationally. He joined the American Seniors Golf Association on his 55th birthday in 1979 and enjoyed being a superior golfer until late in life when macular degeneration affected his sight. Services: Funeral Mass at 12:30 pm on Wed., March 27, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 425 S Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL. 34229. Gathering to follow at The Field Club. A memorial in St. Louis is pending. Interment at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of R.B.
